Finished another book! This one was in a style that took some getting used to and was assembled in a way that was hard to keep track of, at first, but was well worth the effort. It contains all the things that are all the reasons I’m addicted to young adult fiction. Mostly those things have to do with being real and honest in a poetic but also straight forward way that adult books don’t seem to often manage. Adult books seem to often be too concerned with being constructed correctly. I don’t really care about the job being done according to the rules of Strunk and White. I don’t care if real people don’t actually say that many quotable things in a week. What I care about is that the story speaks to my being, and sounds like poetry while it does it. I like the repetition of quotable things, so I can remember them and quote them to myself later. I like the hope mixed in with the strong doses of hard reality. This is a book about all those things, wrapped up in characters who want more from the world, who want to see beauty where others can’t, who are refugees from situations they can’t change or understand. It’s a mind-bending and thought-provoking story of friendship (how sometimes we could hurt even the people closest to our heart) and forgiveness (how it feels to be released from hatred and bitterness) and love (all kinds of love, even love for flawed and imperfect things). .
