Minding The Gap (2018)

Minding the Gap (2018) is about three friends who grew up skating together in Rockford, Illinois. It traces their growing up in abusive homes and the effect it had on them. 

This is a beautiful, incredibly personal film. It’s all about the moments you spend with these three guys. There aren’t so many revelations as there are impressions of their personalities. It’s also a portrait of the Midwest, and Rockford in particular. 

I just want to share two great skate metaphors from this film. The first is that whenever one of the guys pulls off a trick, they can attribute it to all of the time they’ve spent outside of the house. They put all that energy into their board, and over time, learned how to do something really spectacular. The second is that even though skating hurts you, you still love it.
