"Sorry Universe Boss," Kieron Pollard Reacts After Passing Chris Gayle To Become Highest Run-Scorer In T20 Cricket; Check Top 5 Batsmen
For twelve years, Chris Gayle's name sat at the top of T20 cricket's all-time run-scoring list, a record so dominant that it felt almost permanent. On Saturday in Dallas, his former West Indies teammate Kieron Pollard quietly, emphatically ended that reign, and did it in a way that felt entirely fitting for a career built on finishing matches under pressure.
How the Record Fell
Pollard reached the milestone in spectacular fashion during MI New York's Major League Cricket clash against Washington Freedom at Grand Prairie Stadium, launching Asif Mehmood over long-off for six to move from 79 to 85 and carry his career tally to 14,567 runs, overtaking Gayle's mark of 14,562. He went on to finish unbeaten on 100 off 56 deliveries, his second T20 century, ending the innings with 14,582 runs from 736 matches at a strike rate of 151.12, even though MI New York fell to a 30-run defeat in the game itself.
The chase had looked beyond saving when Pollard arrived. MI New York were reduced to 64 for 5 after early wickets from Glenn Maxwell and others, but Pollard built crucial stands with Romario Shepherd and Corbin Bosch to engineer a recovery, reaching his century on the final ball of the innings with 11 boundaries and four sixes.

The Tribute to Gayle
Pollard's reaction at the post-match presentation was warm, humble, and carried the kind of mutual respect that only comes from two players who genuinely understand what the other sacrificed to get there. He said surpassing Chris Gayle, someone West Indian cricketers looked up to for years, was special, and offered a lighthearted apology to the Universe Boss while noting that both men now sit at the top of the list together in spirit, even if only one name leads it.
He went further, reflecting on what he called the leap of faith that players like himself, Gayle, and Dwayne Bravo took in T20 cricket's earlier years, when prioritising the format over international cricket invited considerable criticism. Pollard said he was proud to have lived long enough to see that decision validated, with young cricketers now openly choosing franchise careers over traditional international pathways, something that would have been unthinkable when his own career began.
A Middle-Order Record Like No Other
What makes Pollard's achievement particularly remarkable is the position from which he built it. Only 22 of his 653 T20 innings have come from higher than number four in the batting order, while 286 of his innings have come at number six or seven combined. He has scored more than 5,000 runs each at both number five and number six, a feat shared with only one other batsman in the format's history, Virat Kohli, who has also crossed 5,000 runs in two different batting positions.
Pollard explained that batting in the middle order is widely underappreciated, noting that someone has to do the unglamorous work of finishing matches while everyone else rushes to bat at the top of the order, and that he chose to embrace that specific challenge over the course of his career rather than resent it.

Kieron Pollard now sits at the summit with 14,582 runs from 736 matches, becoming only the ninth batter in T20 history to hold the position outright and the first to do so primarily from a middle-order role.
Chris Gayle follows in second place with 14,562 runs, having held the top spot from 2014 all the way through to 2026, the longest reign of any batsman in the format's relatively short history. Gayle was also the first player from outside England or Australia to ever top this list.
David Warner, Alex Hales, and Jos Buttler complete the group of batters who have crossed the 14,000-run mark in T20 cricket, with Virat Kohli also part of the elite cluster of players who have reached that milestone, underlining just how globally competitive the race to the top of this list has become over the past decade.
The Bigger Picture
Pollard has now played T20 cricket for 23 different teams across his career and has scored more than 500 runs in nine of the eleven countries where he has competed, missing only New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the two nations where he has never played in a domestic league. At 39 years old, and having played in 736 matches, he remains the only player in history to cross the 700-match mark in T20 cricket, a number that speaks as much to his longevity as it does to his finishing ability.
Records in cricket rarely sit still for long, and the gap between Pollard and the next generation of T20 specialists will inevitably close over time. But for now, the record belongs to the man who built it from number six, one finished match at a time, over more than two decades of franchise cricket around the world.
