The petite succubus swayed from side to side as she clasped her fingers behind her back. She hadn’t meant any harm with her compliment, she was simply stating what she saw. She couldn’t describe the strange aura she felt around him, but she simply shrugged it off. Probably some human who was playing with something he didn’t understand.

“And you are handsome, but you look like you get told that a lot by people.”

this shinigami is one of the oldest. it’s said he was around for the birth of this world, rumoured that he is even the creator of this place. the first shinigami. it’s rumoured he’s never set foot on the earth, never visited the realm of those he kills without feeling or even a change in facial expression.

all of that is just rumour, and deus himself cannot separate fact from fiction. he is nothing but a shell at this point, traumatized by something he can no longer remember. he does not play with the other shinigami. he does not even speak; he’s forgotten how to.

but when yagami raito asks his name, he writes it down in a spare notebook. not a death note. he is the only shinigami who writes for leisure as well as duty, and carries around a completely ineffectual notebook for communication.

“well … that’s because i,” sputters, almost convulsing as ribs vibrate from his very own bravado. can barely contain it now, barks of laughter erupting from the base of his throat. the once polite student now far forgotten in the glimpse of just who he really is.  

and only then, when his throat could all but close, does he finally say it out loud. “ —— I’M KIRA.”

As L saw it, it was perfectly logical for Light to believe he had won. They were alone together, and as far as Light knew, the shinigami, Rem, had written the detective’s name. However, the reality that Kira saw was not true.

“I see, Light. Unfortunately,” he paused, a quiet chuckle escaping him as he brought his index finger to his lips. “...the shinigami and I came to an agreement. In exchange for Misa Amane’s freedom, I was spared, and you were convinced nothing had changed.” He couldn’t stop the smile curving his lips as he took a small wireless microphone from his pocket. “And, now, I have evidence.”

“ oh, come on! ” the sophomore exclaims, both hands flying up in aggravation. violet eyes narrow severely at the older male, who seemed to be regarding them with a thinly-veiled disdain. 

no matter. vy wasn’t one who was quick to surrender. they’d just have to press on, cross their fingers, and hope for the best.

they sigh, glare ebbing. “ it’s just tiktok. all i’m asking for is a thirty second recording with you. and i know that you’re a fast learner, so this should be a cinch. ” a fist slams firmly against the table, causing several students to glance the pair’s way. “ say you’ll do it! please? ”
