The first time I saw Obsession, I was one of only four people in the theater, and there was very limited laughter.
Tonight, I saw it with a nearly full theater. The amount of male laughter was truly not it for me. Especially after the jackhammering (obviously, plainly rape) scene.
Maybe some of it you can chalk up to discomfort or absurdity. But as someone who's had someone she did not want inside her, I find it to be a fucking brutal scene to watch, and it keeps going for a sickeningly long time. Which is the point, I think. The shock is supposed to melt away into horror.
I think it goes to show how normalized and played for laughs the lack of female desire (or the pantomime of female pleasure) is in our culture.
