AN: NO WAY HOME SPOILERS AHEAD! They are of the light/vague variety but please know they are still very much present. If you wanted more this very well could potentially turn into a series but I'm also not making promises. All that said though I really hope you enjoy cause man it felt good to dust off my writing skills. Ps the reader is gender neutral - no pronouns are used and hardly any descriptors either so let your imagination run wild besties. Happy reading and enjoy!
Peter missing your movie date wasn’t what made you start to worry. It happened from time to time. You understood that canceled plans happened when you were best friends with a superhero. Except this time Twitter wasn’t full of Spiderman sightings like it usually was. That’s what made you start worrying. As you started back towards the subway station, you checked your phone to make sure you hadn’t missed any notifications. With no red dots in sight, you pocketed the device and quickened your step. You hoped that Peter and May were alright. Everything seemed fine when you left that morning but you also had an early shift at work and were out the door when most people were still asleep.
You bounced on the balls of your feet slightly as you awaited the Parker household door to open. May opened the door and smiled at the sight of you. Having lived across the hall, May would watch you from time to time when your parents needed a babysitter. She had watched you grow up and considered you a part of the family, especially after you and Peter had become friends.
Her smile fell when she noticed the furrowed eyebrows, the forced smile, and how you seemed to have a question on the tip of your tongue just waiting to be spit out. “What’s wrong, dear?” She asked once you were both settled on the couch.
“Is Peter home?” You asked. When May opened the door you had taken her all in, scanning for any sort of injury or sign that she was sick. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary. The only thing missing was Peter.
“I haven’t seen him since breakfast. Is everything alright?”
“We had plans, after my shift, and he didn’t show.”
May’s brow furrowed. That was so very unlike her nephew. Reaching over she grabbed the phone but when it went straight to voicemail, she did her best to smile reassuringly. “What were you two planning to do?” She asked.
“We were going to watch a movie and get something to eat afterwards.”
“Well, I’m no Peter but how about we order some take out and watch one of those cheesy Hallmark movies?”
You nod, grateful for the distraction. Peter was just out being Spiderman. He’d come back late with a pizza and a Netflix movie already picked out to make up for missing today.
Except he didn’t show back up until late the following night.
You had finally found something about a portal which meant alerting the police to Peter’s disappearance wouldn’t do any good. You just hoped that wherever the portal took your best friend that he would be alright and he would be back soon.
The floorboards creaking didn’t cause you to open your eyes. You figured it was May checking in on you. But then the bed shifted and ever so gently arms wrapped around you as they pulled you into their embrace. Your eyes snapped open as you tilted your head back to see who had crawled into bed with you.
There Peter was, still wearing his suit, his hair going in all directions from being under his mask, and giving you a sheepish smile. “Hey.” He greeted, whispering.
“You’re back.” You looked at him in awe. Not quite believing that he was back. It had been a long 36 hours.
“I’m sorry I missed the movie. Maybe we could go tomorrow?”
Nodding, you reached up and wiped away the remaining tears from his cheek. “What happened?”
Letting out a heavy sigh, he pulled you closer and buried his face in your hair. “Can I tell you tomorrow? I’m, um, I’m pretty tired and just want to go to sleep.” He wasn’t really up to reliving one of the worst days of his life for a third time. He needed to get some rest and then much like he did with May before realizing you were also there, he would launch into his story about how multiple dimensions were real and how he was able to save a younger version of himself the same pain of not being able to save their partner.
“Of course.” You placed a kiss to his temple and tightened your hold on him.
He nodded, his hair tickling your neck a bit. “Thank you.” He placed a kiss to your shoulder and soon the two of you settled underneath the covers, wrapped up in each other as you both fell asleep.
AN: This literally came from me needing to write so badly I felt like I was going to burst. So have this one shot featuring a version of an OC of mine some of you may notice from my fic Close to Me because this was the only thing that came to mind instead of the million other things that I need to be writing. Ya gotta love latest hyperfixations. This one is brought to you by Henry Cavill and his plethora of characters. PS I gave him the first name of Garrett.
She reacted impulsively. Something she hadn’t done since she was young and trying to figure out the best way to express her anger. Even though it felt right, it didn’t make it so, and now she was going to be in deep shit for punching the Captain that was under her. He deserved it though, the prick.
He had assaulted one of her pilots. When the young woman had confided in her what had happened and with her permission, she escalated things to try and get him removed. Lieutenant Colonel Kat Meadows always made sure that no matter where base was, it was a safe place for her squadron and fellow military personnel. They were fighting a war, and everyone needed a safe place to lay their head at night. Of course, since the military was still a rather large boys club, the Captain was given a slap on the wrist and sent to return.
When she heard the news, it made her blood boil. If her higher ups weren’t going to punish him, then she would. She had the power to ground him, after all. Plus, the higher ups sent another Captain so that she now was in command of two squadrons as if separating the two would be enough.
“Happy to see me?” He asked as he returned to base. “I know I’m so happy that I might even visit your room later.” A lewd smirk and a wink were sent her way before she punched it off his face.
Kat went in for another blow, wanting to make sure she really did break his nose before she felt two arms wrap around her from behind. She struggled against this new person, kicking out to try to break free but just landing a blow to the hated Captain’s ribs.
“It’s me. It’s me.” The mystery person repeated as his arms constricted around her waist to stop her struggling.
She knew that low, rough, southern drawl anywhere. Army Special Forces Captain Garrett Syverson, her best friend. At the realization, Kat slumped against him, watching as the hated Captain was ushered away to the infirmary.
“Fuck.” She breathed out, leaning her head back against his chest as he set her back down on her feet.
“Uh huh.” Syverson replied, a bit of mirth to his tone.
Kat elbowed him in the ribs, not currently in the mood for his teasing.
“Alright, feisty, let’s go get a game plan together.” He nudged her towards his office while rubbing the spot she elbowed. He may be cut like a Greek god, but she still packed a punch.
“I’m screwed.” She said the moment the door was closed. “He’s going to press charges because that’s what I did to him and because I’m me I’m actually gonna face the consequences.” She plopped down in one of the chairs, covering her face with her hands.
“Kat, you’re well liked. You might be grounded for a week.”
She looked up at him with a pointed glare through her fingers.
Crouching down in front of her, he gathered both of her wrists in his hand to tug her hands away from her face. “Hey, look at me.” He used his free hand to nudge her chin up when she didn’t listen. “You’re gonna be okay. I’m not gonna let them do anythin’ outta hand to you.”
“We’re not even in the same branch, Garrett.”
“When have I ever let you down?”
“Never.” She sighed as cupped his face between her hands. “Do your men know how much of a softy you actually are?” She teased, a ghost of a smirk on her face.
He laughed. “That is only knowledge for you and you alone. Well, and maybe Aika.” That earned him an actual smile which had been his goal the entire time.
She wound up being honorably discharged. When news of that hit the base, the pilot she was protecting, and a few others requested their leave as well. The higher ups got the message loud and clear but even though the hated Captain was later discharged, they still asked Kat not to say anything. She agreed but nothing was ever done in writing which later helped her senate campaign.
When she returned state side one of the things Kat found herself doing was working with a group that helped women veterans and helped protect women soldiers. She wound up lobbying for bills not only for protection for women soldiers but a few other bills that she learned about that would help veterans in general. Her work got noticed and soon she was in D.C. as a senator much to her surprise, especially since a lot of people tried their best to slander her.
“Sir. Sir! Sir, she’s in a meeting, you can’t just walk in.” The sound of her assistant’s voice calling out pulled her away from her phone. She wasn’t really in a meeting. She had just gotten out of one that made her want to scream so as she walked past her assistant’s desk, she told them that she didn’t want to be bothered for thirty minutes. Just as Kat looked up, her office door opened to reveal one Garrett Syverson.
Her eyes widened in shock as a large grin stretched across her features. Before she could even say anything, her assistant squeezed her way through since Syverson took up most of the doorway, looking apologetic towards Kat. “I’m so sorry. I tried to get him to stop…” Her assistant trailed off as she noticed one of the few pictures Kat actually had in her office. They twirled around to face him and did a double take to make sure. “Oh my god, you’re the guy in the photo.” They then turned to face Kat again. “He’s the guy in the photo.”
The photo in question was of her and Syverson at a Military Ball. It wasn’t even the official photo that was taken when they arrived. It was a selfie they had taken together to send to his mom. She had moved her chair closer to him and he had slung an arm around her shoulders to bring her even closer. Both had large grins on their faces and the text had promised that she would come visit soon. She had a couple of days before she shipped out for her last ever tour and wound up staying with the woman a few months when she returned home.
“Yes, he’s the guy in the photo.” Kat confirmed. “Rose, meet Captain Garrett Syverson. One of the only people who is allowed to come into my office without an appointment.”
Rose nodded. “Got it. Well, I’ll let you two get reacquainted.” She said as she made her way back to her desk.
Syverson raised an eyebrow as Kat closed the door. “What’s the story behind the photo?” He asked her.
“You took it. You know.” Kat teased him, not wanting to tell him just how often that photo had come in handy.
“That is not what I meant and you know it.” He gave her a pointed look.
Kat just shrugged and moved to close the blinds that covered the window that looked out to the bullpen. There were now far too many curious eyes trying to see in. “What are you doing…” She trailed off as she realized why he could potentially be standing in her office. “Did they let you go?” She asked whirling around to face him again.
He smirked, knowing she was changing the subject but would get the story out of her at some point. “They let me go.”
“Finally!” She exclaimed as she practically jumped into his arms, wrapping hers around his shoulders. “It’s been so boring without you.”
Chuckling, he gave her a small squeeze. “Says the woman who got up and moved states on me while I was gone.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t have voted for me and then I’d still be there.”
“You don’t know who I voted for.” He teased her.
“You’re right, I don’t. But if you voted for the other guy, I’d be worried about you.” She quipped, lightly patting his cheek.
He rolled his eyes, smiling fondly. “How I’ve missed you. Base was not the same since you left.”
“I’ve been gone for a few years now.” Kat laughed a bit. “But I’ve missed you too.”
“Missed me enough to tell me why I’m known as the guy in the photo ‘round the office?”
She groaned, looking up at the ceiling as she leaned against the arm of the leather chair sitting in front of her desk. “The boys ‘round here love the idea of a woman in uniform but can’t stand getting turned down by one. So one day one of them actually noticed the picture I had on my desk and well, you became my boyfriend.”
He nodded, hating that she had to still deal with pricks who couldn’t take no for an answer. He took a deep breath to calm down his flare of anger before throwing a smirk in her direction. “Damn, then I wish I had known or I would have brought you flowers.”
“You insufferable bastard.”
Their laughter was cut off by the buzz of Kat’s intercom. She rounded her desk and pressed the button to let Rose’s voice fill the room. “Weasel incoming.” Kat rolled her eyes at the news and let out a heavy sigh.
Before Kat could even explain her office door opened and in stepped a man not much taller than Kat in heels. He wore a blue suit and his hair was slicked back to the point it looked greasy. The scruff on his face didn’t even look appealing. For all intents and purposes he was her nemesis on and off the senate floor. The man would just not leave her alone and would not take no for an answer.
He stopped in his tracks at the sight of Syverson, who had taken a few steps to stand in between this man and Kat. The fact that weasel was his code name and based on Kat’s reaction, Syverson deduced that this was one of the men that Kat had just informed him about.
“So he is real.” Weasel said.
“Yeah, because I would have a photoshopped picture on my desk.” Kat rolled her eyes. “Is there something you wanted? Or can you wait to annoy me later when I don’t have company?”
Weasel chuckled. “I do so enjoy our banter Kitty Kat. Why don’t you introduce me to your friend here?”
“It’s boyfriend, actually.” Syverson said, bringing the attention back on him. “Garrett Syverson. Captain of the Army Special Ops.” He said as he held out his hand. When Weasel took his hand, he held it tighter than he probably should have and gave it a firm shake. “And I would prefer you to keep whatever relationship you have with my girl strictly professional. Or we’ll have a problem. Is that understood?”
“He’s as strong as he looks, Kat.” He pulled his hand away and gave it a small shake to ease some of the discomfort. “I’ll see you at the security committee meeting.”
The door closed once again after he scurried away. Kat didn’t even acknowledge it, she kept staring at her best friend. “I’m sorry. What was that?”
“Why rely on a photo when you’ve got the real thing here?” He asked, unphased.
“But my girl?”
Syverson shrugged. “It seemed right in the moment.”
“Right.” She nodded, trying not to show just how much hearing those words coming from him affected her. She could admit that her best friend was good looking. She’d known that for a while. Puberty had been very kind to him but his boyish charm that she knew so well was still underneath all his chiseled looks.
“I can go get him back if you want to continue whatever conversation that was supposed to be.” He pointed towards the door, a small smirk on his face.
She shook her head. “No, no it’s fine. Not even back for five minutes and you’re already savin’ my ass.”
“Your ass has never needed savin’. Just assisted every now and again.”
“Well, would you like to assist it out the door so we can go grab some lunch?”
“Are you asking me out on a date?”
She couldn’t tell if he was being serious or if he was still teasing her. So she matched his tone when she asked. “Do you want it to be a date?”
“Kat, if I was taking you out on a date it wouldn’t be right after I just kicked a guy out of your office.”
“Then what would it look like?”
“Why don’t you meet me at seven at Summerhouse and find out?” He smirked.
She bit the inside of her cheek to keep her cool. “So that’s a no to lunch then?”
“Is that a yes to dinner?” He asked her.
A soft smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “It’s a yes to dinner.”
He grinned before bending down to kiss her on the cheek. “I will see you at seven then.” He told her before heading to her door. Just as he opened the door, he turned back around with a smirk. “What? You’re not comin’ to lunch now?”
Kat groaned and playfully shoved him out the door. So this is what dating her best friend would be like.

AN: This is a prequel of sorts to my Newsies AU Finding Home. It dives in deeper to the friendship between Katherine, Darcy, and Bill and sets up how the dynamic is in the main fic.
Despite their parents being competitors, Katherine Pulitzer, Darcy Reid, and Bill Hearst Jr, were the best of friends. The other children of the big wigs that surrounded them seemed happy to live their life one social event to the next. Not these three. The trio wanted to change the world, use their influence for good. They just happened to have the families to help with that. All three of them believed in the power of the press, knowing that they would follow in their father’s footsteps by turning to journalism. After that though, they would change course and use it in a far better way than their fathers’.
Katherine had the biggest fight in doing this. Joseph Pulitzer did not want his daughters going anywhere near a newspaper. Darcy and Bill helped her anyway. In high school they all joined the school paper. Katherine was the journalist, Bill helped with the editing, and Darcy helped with the printing and distribution. They were a team, they always were. Until Bill’s father insisted that he start learning the family business.
Bill’s father wasn’t the most pleasant of men. Katherine knew this first hand with how much her father and Bill’s fought. She and Darcy just never expected it to rub off on Bill. As time went on, Bill grew more irritable, lashed out more, and just didn’t care like he used to.
Darcy had even grown fearful for how Bill would react when he revealed that he was gay. He had told Katherine first and she had given him nothing but love in return. He dared to even say it made the two closer. It was a cover up though. What really made the two closer was the fact that they were beginning to tire of cleaning up Bill’s messes.
To their surprise, Bill welcomed Darcy with open arms, claiming he always had a suspicion. They hoped it meant that the Bill they knew was in there somewhere and they just needed to get him away from his father to pull him back out. They went to the beach for spring break that year. It was just like how things were before. They never stopped laughing and it was lightest any of them had felt in years.
Then they returned home and Bill tore Katherine’s latest article a part, essentially making her rewrite the whole thing. When she questioned him about it, he yelled at her, calling her a know it all like her father and claiming that she thought herself the leader of their small group when she was anything but. Katherine balled up her article and threw it at his face, calling him an asshole before running out of the room.
Darcy stared at his friend momentarily in horror. Who was this person in his best friend’s body? He soon ran after Katherine to make sure that he was okay, pushing further when he heard Bill make a comment about how he needed to get his head out of Katherine’s ass.
“I’m done.” Katherine had told Darcy and despite his best efforts, she stuck by her words. “You can’t help someone that doesn’t want it. I just hope he remembers who he is or realizes he needs to see someone.” She applied for a university in Chicago, planning on getting far enough away from those who were trying to keep her down.
“When I’m gone, don’t go back to being his maid. You’ve got dreams too.” She told Darcy before she boarded the plane for her new beginning.
Darcy listened, for the most part. It was a little difficult when they became roommates and went to the same university for the same degree. He learned how to properly wrap bandages for a boxer’s fracture and learned how to adjust to his friend’s new take on life. Bill was just trying to please his father until he took over the Journal. Darcy had even told Katherine this on one of their weekly phone calls. Katherine still was weary, wondering if even then their friend would come back.
When Katherine came home for the holidays, Bill had apologized for how he had treated her the rest of high school. He wanted to start again and Katherine agreed, even if she still kept him at arm’s length. They learned how to be friends again with this distance between them. They no longer told each other everything or went to the other for advice as often as they used to but they grew to be civil. Darcy was just glad that they seemed to work it out and he no longer had to sit on pins and needles when the two were in the same room together. Sure he was sad the only time the two spent time together was when all three of them hung out but they all had to figure out their new normal.
Graduation day came and Katherine stayed in Chicago. They visited each other as often as they could. Bill and Katherine even began to ask small favors of each other again as long as it pertained to a story. Katherine landed a job at the Chicago Tribune and stayed there until she could no longer take writing the fluff pieces she had been tasked with. Darcy started out at Buzzfeed before moving to a small magazine and moving up the chain to become editor. Bill went to work at the Journal. He started out as a journalist before his father made him an editor over one of the smaller sections. Once he proved himself there he became editor of the crime section. Now that they’re all back in New York, it’s time the people knew, a new era of journalism was about to begin.
AN: Thank you so much for all the love this story has received! We're not near the end yet, a few more things gotta happen before that but we are getting close! I hope you enjoy this update. Just so you know this one does kinda push towards that teen rating but it's nothing you haven't seen on screen in a say PG-13 movie before. Happy reading!
Katherine went to go close her door. She had a few hours to freshen up before heading to the art gallery opening. Her hand met air though. Confused, Katherine turned around to actually face her doorway when she noticed that her bedroom door was missing. “What happened to my door?!” She yelled.
Jack poked his head out from his room, her shout loud enough to be heard over the music he was playing. “Well, it certainly does look like you’re missing a door.”
She gave him an exasperated look. “How did you not notice it before?”
He came out into the hallway with a smirk. “Believe it or not, princess, I don’t pay attention to your room all the time.”
“Ugh, you’re no help to me.” She groaned, going out into the living room to interrogate the two boys sitting on the couch.
Jack just rolled her eyes and followed her out there, even walking faster so he could get there first. “Alright, boys. What happened to Katherine’s door?”
Romeo paused the movie and looked up at his roommates. Charlie sighed, looking over to the two. “Those who aren’t liars get to keep their doors.” The blonde said.
Katherine looked over at Charlie in disbelief. “This is all because I didn’t tell you guys I was a Pulitzer? Well welcome to the family.”
The boys all looked at her in confusion. She rolled her eyes before explaining. “My father took my door away because I slammed it one too many times but he was the one that kept upsetting me.”
“Now it’s because you lied to us.” Charlie said.
“I’m not the only one who keeps secrets.” She threw back before storming off but not before she saw Charlie’s brief terrified look casted her way. Before going to her room, she slammed Jack’s door before softly opening it again and going into her room.
“Hey…” Jack dragged out the sound as he hurried to check to make sure nothing fell off his walls.
Romeo looked over to Charlie. “Are you sure that was smart, pissing her off? Darcy’s told me horror stories.”
Charlie sighed. “You mean you aren’t even a little bit mad?”
The other boy shook his head. “I know her father’s an ass and treated Jack wrong but she’s nothing like her old man. I mean she’s here because she wants nothing to do with him, right? We all need fresh starts and second chances.”
“I guess you’re right.” Charlie groaned. “You gonna listen to your own advice?”
“Too soon, Charlie, too soon!” Romeo said with a bit of a laugh.
Once he knew everything was fine, Jack made his way over to Katherine’s room. She was face down in one of her pillows, sprawled out on her bed. Chuckling, Jack sat down next to her. “So because you don’t have a door, you had to slam mine?”
She nodded her head. “It wouldn’t have been a dramatic exit without it.” She mumbled into her pillow.
That made Jack laugh. “What like accusing people that they all were keeping things secret wasn’t dramatic enough for ya?”
She shook her head. After a few moments of silence between the two, Jack sighed. “I’m sorry for Charlie overreacting. We’re real protective of each other and well your pops isn’t one of our most favored people.”
“Mine either.” She mumbled.
Jack looked down at her with a small smile and moved some hair from out of her face. His smile grew when he could properly see her features. “I know, ace. I’ll try to persuade him to give ya your door back.”
She smiled back up at him. “What are you wearing tonight?”
He placed a hand over his heart. “You don’t trust my fashion choices?”
“You’ve had some bad ones. I kinda need to make sure I keep getting assignments.” She teased him.
“That hurts, ace, that hurts.” He laughed a bit. “What are you wearing tonight?”
“Probably just one of my black dresses. It’s nothing too fancy but it’s a step up from business casual.” That got her a blank stare from him. “Oh, my god let go find you something.” She sat up and got off her bed before going into his room.
She was standing in front of his closet when he joined her. She shifted through his pants and tossed a pair of gray slacks on his bed. She moved onto his shirts and found a red and gray plaid button down. She then grabbed a gray striped tie and some gray shoes. Once her hunt was done, she smiled over at Jack. “There you go.”
He groaned. “I gotta wear a tie?”
“The tie and shoes are what dresses it up a bit more. Or I suppose you could forget the tie and wear your gray blazer.”
Jack sighed. “I guess tie it is since the blazer’s dirty.”
“Well, then there you go. We’ve got to leave in a few hours.”
A few hours later, the two reappeared and smiled at each other. They met in the middle of the hallway and Katherine adjusted his tie. “I swear I have to fix this every time before we go out.”
He smirked down at her as he stuffed his hands in his pockets to keep from touching her. “Maybe it’s so I can get you close.”
She looked up at him, hands still on his tie. Something stirred inside them both as they locked eyes. She had this flash of an image of her pulling him down to her with his tie but Romeo’s voice broke the spell. “Get a room you two.”
At the sound of Romeo’s voice, the pair jumped apart. Katherine cleared her throat and smoothed down her dress. “C’mon Jack we’re gonna be late.” She walked off, not even acknowledging Romeo.
Jack did the complete opposite. As he passed by his friend, he stared him down before following Katherine out of the apartment. When the door closed, Romeo began laughing. Charlie rolled his eyes as he kept flipping through Netflix to find the next thing they were going to watch. “You wanna take a bet about if it happens tonight or not?”
“No. Because I know it’s not.”
“Then I think we have ourselves a bet because I think it is. Ever since they made up after whatever happened at Davey’s wedding they’ve been close. It’s only a matter of time before they give in.” Romeo couldn’t believe that Charlie didn’t see it.
“Me knowing that I proved you right will be plenty victory enough for me.” Charlie just grinned.
“Ah, whatever.” Romeo waved his hand as he made his way into the kitchen. “Whatcha in the mood for tonight?” He asked, pulling open the drawer that held their take out menus.
Katherine stared at the painting. Her head tilted as she tried to determine what was on the canvas. Jack came up beside her, handing her a glass of champagne. “Please tell me you’re not going to give them a good review.” He whispered in her ear.
She tried so hard to not let his closeness get to her. That was beginning to get harder and harder as time went on. “I’m going to give them a fair review.” She replied, taking a sip of her drink.
“Oh, c’mon, Kath, you don’t even know what that’s supposed to be and none of these pieces have any emotion behind them.” He pointed to the painting they were currently standing in front of. “How is this supposed to be a showcase on emotions when there’s no feeling behind them?”
She turned to look at him. “Maybe that’s the point? You’re feeling something now aren’t you?”
His eyes drifted down to her lips. It would be so easy. They were already standing so close to one another so no one else would be able to hear their actual thoughts on the gallery. “The only reason I’m feeling anything is because of the person standing in front of me.”
Katherine snickered. “Is that the best you’ve got?” She took a step back, finishing off her champagne. “You’re gonna have to do better than that.” She then walked off to the next area of the gallery.
Jack stared after her, groaning a bit as he slid to a slight crouch before following her. This woman was going to be the death of him. He walked up behind her and placed his chin on her shoulder. “Don’t you have enough for your article already?”
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t know why I keep bringing you to these things.”
“Because you would be bored to death without me.” He stood up straight as he smirked at her.
“I highly doubt that.” She teased him back.
“Oh, so it’s like that, huh?” He feigned offense before getting an idea. “Then I bet you one kiss, and I mean an actual kiss, not one on the cheek or whatever other loophole you’ll be able to find, that you won’t be able to make it through the rest of this event without me.”
Never one to back down from a challenge, she stuck out her hand for them to shake on it. Jack grinned before bringing his hand up to spit on it. Katherine internally groaned but copied his actions before shaking his hand. “Have fun, princess. See you in five minutes.” He smirked before heading out of the gallery.
With him now gone, Katherine sighed before looking at the program for the evening’s festivities. They were wrapping up on the viewing and now she just had to sit through the speeches. She could do that.
She indeed could not do it. The artist droned on and it was clear that the reason the art didn’t have any feeling behind them was because the artist didn’t have any personality. She tried so hard to make it through. Ten minutes in she couldn’t take it anymore and slipped out. Standing in the alley way, she checked her phone to see where Jack went. She saw the time instead and wondered if she could really go back in there for thirty more minutes.
Fuck it. Katherine thought as she read where Jack had gone. Sarah hadn’t been mentioned in months. He had started to flirt with her. She couldn’t keep lying to herself. Stupid bet be damned. She would kiss that stupid smirk right off his face.
Katherine walked to the bar at the end of the block. Once inside she looked around for Jack, finding him sitting at the end of the bar with his back to her. Perfect. She went up behind him and tapped his shoulder. He turned around and before he could get a teasing word, let alone a smirk out, she pulled him down to her, kissing him.
As soon as their lips met, a fire ignited between them. Jack grabbed at her waist and pulled her in close. Her back arched ever so slightly from the height difference of him sitting on the bar stool and her standing on the floor. One of her hands crept up into his hair as the other stayed grasping his shirt.
“I was beginning to think that I was wrong.” He said in between the wet kisses he left along her neck.
“Have to keep your ego in check somehow.” She teased as she tugged on his hair a bit. “The artist was as dull as his paintings.” She further explained before nipping at his earlobe and kissing his neck. “Now take me home.”
He smirked down at her before giving her one last kiss. “Yes, m’am.” He then took her hand and pulled her out of the restaurant.
They couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. In the taxi, fingers were tangled in hair as lips locked. In the elevator, shirts were untucked and skirts were pushed up. Once they finally made it inside the loft, Jack pressed Katherine against the door. Working on leaving a small bruise on her neck, his hands made their way down to the back of her thighs. “Jump.” He ordered in between kisses.
Managing a small hop, Katherine locked her legs around his waist. She then pulled his head back to her and kissed him. He squeezed her legs, doing his best to navigate to his room while she kissed and sucked along his neck.
With the sound of the bedroom door closing, Charlie and Romeo slowly sat back up from where they lowered themselves to hide from their preoccupied roommates. Romeo smirked over at Charlie. “Guess you’re glad you really didn’t take that bet after all, huh?”
Charlie threw a pillow at Romeo. “Oh, shut up.”
“You think you can lighten up on her? She seems to make him really happy.” Romeo’s statement was accented by the laughter that came from Jack’s bedroom.
The slightly older boy sighed, leaning his head against the back of the couch. “Yeah, I guess so. She really hasn’t been all that bad.”
Romeo smiled. “That’s the spirit. Maybe we can give her, her door back?”
Charlie nodded. “Yeah, but I’m not going near that hallway until they’ve for sure fallen asleep.” His comment was accented by a moan.
The younger of the two shook his head. “Yeah, not going anywhere near there. So what we watching?” He scrolled through his queue and randomly selected one of the tv shows he’s been meaning to watch so they would have something to binge for however long their two roommates would be at it.
Katherine groaned as something came in contact with her breast. It wasn’t a good feeling. It felt more like someone had punched her. Then she heard the murmurs coming from next to her. She opened her eyes and saw Jack squirming in bed, an arm stretched out where he had in fact hit her in his sleep. It seemed like his nightmare was just beginning and she hoped that was the case.
Sitting up, she wrapped the shirt of his around her. Just before she could try and wake him, the screaming started. She began to run her fingers through his hair, allowing her legs to take any hits from him thrashing about. “Jack, wake up for me. It’s just a dream. Wake up. You’re safe. I’m safe.” She remained calm as if she had been doing this for years. She kept repeating the soothing words to try and get him to wake up.
Slowly but surely, the thrashing stopped, the shouts turned to murmurs, and Jack opened his eyes. He blinked a few times to orient himself back into reality, all the while Katherine continued playing with his hair. Jack turned on his side and looked up at her with his arms open wide. She smiled down at him and slid back down onto the bed and nestled herself against him.
She wrapped her arms around his torso just as he wrapped his arms around hers. His hands slipped under his shirt she was wearing, hands splayed along her back as he brought her as close to him as he possibly could. The warmth and feel of her skin against his made him want to stay like that forever. He buried his head against her neck, placing a few light kisses there. “This is so much better than waking up to the boys.” He mumbled against her skin.
That made her laugh. “Yeah, I don’t know what I’d do if Tony was the first face I saw after a bad dream.”
Jack chuckled. “I’m telling him you said that.”
She gasped. “Don’t you dare. I won’t hear the end of it for weeks.”
Katherine felt him smile against her neck. She placed a kiss to his hair and began to rub his back. After she took care of Robin Hood, she was planning on going after Snyder next. She didn’t want him anywhere near the loft, her, or Jack, ever again.
“Katherine? We’re gonna be more than like friends with benefits, right?” He whispered, still from the comfort of hiding his face in her neck.
“I’d hope you’d treat your ace a little better than that.”
He pulled back to look at her face. He really couldn’t believe what she had just said. “My ace?” He asked, looking at her in awe.
She nodded, a soft smile playing at her lips. “Yes, your ace. I’d follow you anywhere, Jack Kelly.”
Jack grinned before leaning down and kissing her. “Lunch is on me on Monday.” He whispered against her lips.
“You’re gonna make me wait until Monday to go on a real date with you?” She teased him.
He just smirked. “Mmhmm, I’m planning on keeping you in here with me for the rest of the day.”
“I think that’s something I can live with.” She pulled him in for a deep, passionate kiss. They didn’t deviate from his plan at all much to the dismay of their roommates.
Summary: Evelyn Jones' mother always warned her about falling in love with the hero types. So, she fell in love with a lawyer instead.
AN: I didn't choose the Daredevil life, it definitely chose me. After Matt Murdock showed up on my screen once again I fell down the rabbit hole of rewatching the series and honestly this hot mess of a human being stole my whole heart so here this is. I hope you enjoy as much as I've enjoyed writing it. (Also look at me not making y’all wait too long after my teasing lol)
She really didn’t have to bribe her boss to let her come in a little later but bagels and coffee never hurt. While her best friends had been office hunting, she had been stuck at work. So when Shirley let her come in at 9 instead of 8 she jumped at the chance to finally check out the office the two had landed on. They had been in it for a couple of weeks now and they had been complaining about how she hadn’t stopped by yet.
She had seen it over the weekend once and while they didn’t have a whole lot of clients, they still teased her about never coming to visit during work hours. Especially after they hired Karen Page. So when things seemed to settle for a little bit at Metro-General, Evelyn talked her boss into letting her come in a little later than usual so she could get them off her back.
Evelyn Jones had been best friends with Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson since their freshman year of college. She, like the boys, grew up in Hell’s Kitchen and dreamed of giving back to the community. So the fact that they finally had their own brick and mortar building made her quite excited for them. On top of that, they hired their first employee. She couldn’t wait to meet her either, especially since she had quite the story of how she wound up working for Nelson and Murdock.
Just past the hardware store, Evelyn pulled the door that lay between the red pillars open. She was nothing but smiles as climbed the stairs. She was absolutely thrilled for her best friends and to see their dreams come true. Chuckling softly to herself at the paper sign taped to the door, she made the mental note to reach out to one of her contacts from her marketing side gig to see if she couldn’t get them a better sign.
“Well, look who it is.” Foggy smiled as Evelyn walked through the door. She easily returned his grin before he pulled her in for his infamous bear hug.
“Yeah, the boss let me come in a little late today as long as I bring breakfast.” She said as she pulled back. “I had to finally see the new digs in daylight and meet Miss Page.” She waved over to Karen as she turned to be more open to the room.
“It’s not much to look at, or so I’m told.” Matt quipped, leaning in the doorway to his office, a smirk on his features.
Evelyn shook her head with an amused smile as she went to go hug her other best friend. “Hi, Matty.” She whispered with a touch of exasperation in her voice.
“Hi, Evie.” He replied with full-blown smugness as he gave her a small squeeze. “Still questioning our friendship?” He continued to tease in the hopes of trying to cover up his wince from where the cut on his side had opened back up.
Pulling back, she cupped both sides of his face, a large grin stretched across her features as she scanned his. Something was up and she’d figure it out eventually. “Everyday.” She answered with a laugh before letting go and taking in the office space fully.
“It is rather quaint.” She said before turning to finally face the woman she had heard so much about.
“Oh c’mon, Eve. Quaint?” Foggy asked with a slight roll of his eyes while she introduced herself to Karen.
Nodding, she continued talking to Karen and apologized for any future shenanigans her friends pulled her into. “But I promise you’re in good hands. I trust these two to the ends of the earth. However,” she grabbed a pen and wrote her number down on a sticky note, “if you ever need me to get them in line, call me.” She handed the yellow square over to Karen.
“I do need to get going though. I wish I could stay longer but I have to pick up bagels.” She said as she made her rounds again, telling her friends goodbye. “Promise I’ll try to stop by again for a longer visit.” She said as she pulled away from Matt. Before she could leave his side, however, he took hold of her wrist.
“Before you go, could you take a look at Foggy’s decorating and make sure he didn’t get me anything ridiculous?”
There it was. Time to find out why he was wincing. “Yeah, of course.”
He smiled gratefully as he turned to lead her inside his office. Once they were both inside, he shut the door. He wasn’t entirely sure how she was going to take this news, especially since he needed her to help him patch up where he had torn the stitches but it wasn’t like he could go to Claire right now.
As soon as the door shut, Karen turned to look at Foggy, who was heading back into his office after rolling his eyes at his friends. “Are they more than friends?” Karen asked, figuring that maybe they kept things under wraps so that Foggy wouldn’t feel like a third wheel. But they seemed awfully close, even more so than Evelyn and Foggy.
He laughed. “You just met her and you’re already asking that?” He leaned against her desk, ready to give her a glimpse at the history that was Matt and Evelyn. “There’s always been something more between those two but there’s never been the right timing so I’ve had to deal with that for years.”
Karen nodded, glancing back to the door where the light was now on. “So what are they talking about, you think?”
“I’m hoping he’s finally telling her how he feels. She’s seeing this guy but neither Matt nor I like him. But in reality, he’s probably just checking in to make sure that she’s okay. It’s been a couple days since we’ve seen her in person. She stays busy and well, we’ve been setting up a new firm so it doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for us to hang out like we usually do.”
“You three seem really close.” She said with a smile. It was nice to see and she was grateful they all easily seemed to have adopted her into their group. She really didn’t have anyone after moving to New York. She thought she’d be fine with it but after meeting Foggy, Matt, and now Evelyn, she couldn’t have asked for nicer people to consider friends.
“Yeah, we are. But we’re always happy to bring in more friends to our crazy.” Foggy smiled as he went back into his office.
Behind the closed door, Matt finally let Evelyn see how much pain he was in. She flicked on the light before hurrying over to help him sit down. He took off his suit jacket revealing the bloodstain blooming at his side. He had walked too quickly trying to keep up with the mysterious man who had just hired him and Foggy to represent a man named Healy.
“What the hell happened to you?!” Eve whispered. She knew he had a rough night a couple of days ago but he hadn’t told her just how rough. This was the worst she had ever seen him.
“You’re not going to like my answer. First aid kit is in the bottom drawer, by the way.”
With a sigh, she crouched down and pulled out the kit that he reassured would be there. Setting it on the desk, she laid out the supplies she would need and put on a pair of gloves. “Are you going to tell me now or should I expect a visit from you later tonight?” She asked as she crouched back down.
“Can I come over later? What time do you get off work?”
“Six.” She answered as she peeled back his shirt, moving quickly with some gauze to stop the bleeding.
“I’ll bring dinner.”
She looked up at him, worry etched across her features. “It’s that kind of story, huh?”
“Russians like their knives.”
“Shit, Matty.” She huffed out as she began to clean his wound before she stitched him back up. “How did you even reopen this? It looks professionally done.”
“Followed a guy a little too quickly.”
She shook her head, focusing on the stitches. “Did you at least get what you were looking for?”
“No. Just that he got into a car and several pulled away at once.”
“Well, that’s a little anticlimactic.” She set the tools aside and placed gauze over the wound, taping it to him to keep it in place. “What would you have done if I hadn’t shown up?”
“You know I used to patch up my dad right?”
“Yes and that’s how you taught me because the first time you asked me to patch you up I had just started at the hospital and now it’s like you expect me to know what I’m doing.”
“I expect you to know what you’re doing because I taught you how.” He huffed out a laugh.
“If you pop your fresh stitches because you’re teasing me, I’ll be even more upset.” She gave him a pointed glare, even though she knew he couldn’t see it but she was fairly certain he could always feel it when she threw them his way. He always had a slight grimace on his face when it appeared. “Do you have a clean shirt?”
“Yeah, in the garment bag on the back of the door.”
After cleaning up, Eve brought the clean shirt over and helped him into it. “Take it easy for the next few days, please. I’m only in the admin side of healthcare and there is a reason for that. If you injure yourself any worse you’re going to have to go to the actual hospital.”
He took her hands in his, bringing them up to his lips and pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Thank you, Eve.”
She rolled her eyes and kissed his forehead. “Just be careful, please. Now I’ve really got to go. I'll call and check in later, okay?”
He nodded, letting her go. “Yeah, okay. See you later.”

Evelyn had barely gotten changed into something more comfortable when a knock sounded throughout her apartment. Moments later, Matt walked through the door, holding a take-out bag from her favorite Italian restaurant. “Eve?” He called out as he made his way towards her kitchen.
“Be out in a minute!” She replied as she tossed her work clothes in her hamper. She pulled out the hairband that kept her hair up in the messy bun she threw it up in about midway through her shift. She needed the extra moment to prepare herself for whatever he was about to tell her. How bad the story was depended on what meal he had gotten for her. “So what did you get for me?” She asked as she made her way out of her bedroom.
He tightened his grip around the chair momentarily before he pulled it back for her to sit. They had somehow managed to create a system based on the food they ordered. Chicken parmesan, they were celebrating. Ravioli was just catching up, a regular dinner out. Tortellini meant bad news. “Why don’t you sit down first?” He said, easing his grip as he turned towards her with his best reassuring smile.
That was all the answer she needed. “You got tortellini didn’t you?” She asked as she sat down, opening up the tin to reveal what she already knew. She let out a heavy sigh as she waited for him to sit down.
Moving his chair closer, he angled his body towards her and reached for her hand. She didn’t give it to him but he kept it out for her to take at any time. Instead, she twirled her fork around for a few moments before stabbing at the cheese-filled pasta. “Who patched you up?” She asked after they both had taken a bite of their food.
“A nurse.”
“Do I know them?” She arched a brow towards him, taking another bite.
“She didn’t say where she worked.”
“And where did she find you?”
“In a dumpster.” He said around his next mouthful.
“In a?!” She gripped her fork and looked up towards the ceiling letting out a rush of air. “What would have happened if she hadn’t found you?”
“I’m not sure.” He said but he knew exactly what would have happened. He would have broken the promise he made to her when she found out about his after-hours activities. He knew she came to the same conclusion when she dropped her fork on the table.
She sighed, covering her face with her hands. He reached out, dragging a hand away from her face. She watched as he played with her fingers momentarily before intertwining them. Holding her hand in his as she processed the details he hadn’t told her before. Ever so quietly, he finally spoke up. “Still questioning our friendship?”
Evelyn leaned back in her seat with a small, exasperated huff. “Every fucking day.”
He let out a relieved sigh as he chuckled, smiling at her answer. He really thought he had lost her there for a moment. He had nearly broken his promise to her, his promise to come home. She had gone quiet and he couldn’t quite make out what she was feeling. Which is why he asked his question and why her answer meant a great deal to him.
They finished eating in companionable silence. Once they were done, Evelyn cleaned up, ready to truly settle in for the night. She had some shows to catch up on and she needed to figure out a restaurant to go to later in the week. She and Will were going out after work in a couple of days and it was her turn to pick where they went. Although walking around and seeing where it took them sounded fun too. If only Will was as adventurous.
“Do you want to come over? Have a drink?” Matt asked her, leaning against the counter.
“I’m gonna pass tonight. My couch hasn’t seen me in a while. I need to let it know that I’m not neglecting it.” She joked. “You’re more than welcome to stay. I think I have something around here.”
He shook his head. “I don’t want to take away time from your couch.”
Evelyn soon wrapped him in a hug, holding him to her tightly. She needed to feel that he was actually there with her and he was more than happy to oblige. He easily returned the embrace, arms winding around her waist. “Thank you for dinner.” She wound up saying instead of the multitude of other things she wanted to say. Half of them she couldn’t because she was in a relationship.
“Next time it won’t be tortellini.”
She chuckled. “It was still good despite the news that came with it.”
“I’m going to be more careful.”
“Yeah, you better.” She gave him a small squeeze before pulling back. “Be careful going home. I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”
He nodded, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Sweet dreams, Evie.”
“Night, Matty.” She softly smiled before walking him to the door.
AN: This is something that just wouldn't leave me alone. It's set after the DCEU/Snyder Cut Justice League cause I just need more scenes with them together please. I would love to know your thoughts and if you would like to see this be turned into a series cause I have ✨ ideas ✨.
“Miss Prince, there’s a reporter here to see you.”
Diana turned from where she watched the crew unloading the shipment from the Louvre into the halls of Metropolis History Museum. She glanced behind her colleague to see who could possibly be requesting to see her when she noticed that it was Clark. “Thank you,” she said, after returning his sheepish smile and wave with a charmed smile of her own. “Will you make sure they don’t break anything?” She then asked, handing over the clipboard she had hugged to her chest.
“I didn’t realize this partnership was news worthy.” She quipped in greeting as she motioned for them to head somewhere with a little more privacy.
“The art world is all a buzz that the Louvre is coming to Metropolis. I may have said I could get an exclusive.” He chuckled, causing Diana to join in his laughter.
“Just let me know what you need and hopefully I won’t bore your readers.” She smirked as she lowered herself down to sit on the stairs that led up to the second floor of the museum.
“I doubt you could do that.” He smiled, joining her on the stairs as he set his shoulder bag in between his feet. “I’m actually not here to only ask if I can interview you.”
Diana turned to him, concern written all over her face. “Has something happened?” She asked, wondering if she had somehow missed something.
“No,” Clark was quick to reassure her. “Nothing’s happened. I had heard you were in town and I realized I never got the chance to apologize for our run in after I was revived. So I wanted to come and do just that.”
Shaking her head, she placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze. “You were not yourself, Kal. I do not hold that against you. I have forgiven you long before now. I was just glad that you were able to fight alongside us once again.”
“I’m just glad I finally remembered. That I remembered in time.”
“Me too.” She bumped her shoulder against his. “Are you doing okay? Being back?”
He slowly nodded, trying to figure out how he wanted to answer. “It’s been an adjustment. People just think that Clark Kent needed to move back home to help his mom. While the world mourned this part of me and now they celebrate my return. I know Martha or Lois isn’t exactly thrilled I’ve gone back to running head first into danger again but I can’t just turn that part of myself off. People still need help.”
“They do but it is okay to take time to recover. You came back from the dead, Kal. Even with strength of your caliber it must have taken its toll. You have a team to lean on now. And one of your teammates will be in your backyard for a few more weeks."
Clark let out a sigh, looking to the ceiling before back at Diana. "I'll try. I've not exactly met a whole lot of others that can keep up with me."
"It's all anyone can ask." She patted his knee before standing. Diana had noticed one of her colleagues searching for her. She held up a hand to wave while also letting them know she'd be back shortly. "Give me a call when you'd like to schedule that interview or if you ever need a sparring partner." She smirked as she gave him a wink before walking back to the loading dock.
