A Blessed Brew*

Deep in the cavernous halls of the monastery’s basement, Trappist brothers are signaled by Abbot Fitzgerald’s abatement. At the still, they saw he stalled. Their silence grew in the moment. He tried the brew and wrinkled his brow ‘fore bestowing his judgement.

In fervor, a score of hands signalled each other that all was good and right in the land as the abbot blessed their halls.

* I felt inspired by r/monkslookingatbeer, so I wrote this as a result.

American Burgher: To Sling Words and Stones

He can see his winded breath breathed as smokestacks ove’ the burroughs. All the way, he prayed a mass – a requiem to ancient furloughs. Past the glints of broken glass, he can see his moonlit sorrows. Woe, Jerome had found the death t’ promises o’ new t’morrows.

Losing things atop his head; uncomposed, his woes, his issues. He then blows his nose aloud ’nd wishes he had kept his tissues. How could he have just allowed love to drip akin t’ white ooze? Softly sobbing, something ’s said: “If love is great, then why d’d I lose.”

Somehow, he knew something ‘s wrong and the time has come to end this. Both creating spectacles for their neighbors since the last census. Blood-bespeckled spectacles on the ground lie with cracked lenses. Oh, Jerome bemoans the long and senseless years that fritzed his senses.

“Goddamnit, get back inside.” ”Blasphemy,” ‘rome wish’s to snap, an’ heathenish words instead slip: “If God were true, this would not happen.” Bending down, he gets a grip before he slips and falls again. Mel barbarically derides Jerome’s “antics,” say’ng he isn’t a man.

Twisted frame ‘n’ shattered vision leads Jerome to let Mel know he “never loved your mind.” In kind, she snaps/replies, “You listen closely. I’ll never mind your love.” Blind in pain trudging towards Mel, homely ‘rome feels the grave incision. In his frail heart, he’s become lonely.

Don’t you remember a bright summer Sunday? The sun in our eyes but we didn’t much mind; A river of cool, relaxing, deep waters flowed by, ‘nd no anguish in our minds ‘til that bright summer Sunday.

Don’t you remember the dreams of yesterday? Your skin was so thick, I’d think it was rind. A swimmer or two here stirring these thoughts of mine. Don’t you think ever of things that we used t’ say?

I don’t remember that bright summer Sunday, Just dark, storming skies as the clouds loomed on by. ‘nd the river was full/destructive, had flooded. Unkind, It took up my home. I realize it’s not yet Sunday.

I do remember the dreams of yesterday. Your heart was so full, and it felt just like mine. You were a dancer distracting these thought streams of mine.* Oh, I remember the things that we used t’ say.

Where has gone our bright summer Sunday? Where has hid the sun in our sky? Where has flowed the river of time? I think we’ve wandered off. We’re too far astray.**

*Alternatively, use You were a danger disturbing these thought streams of mine. **Alternative final lines: Where has flowered the love of our lives? We left it to be taken up, washed away.

I went off like an alarm that was blasted into space. I was getting mighty high ‘fore I realized what went on. I took off mighty quick in this two-person race. Though I made no sound, I was shaking when I’d gone ‘n’ Reached my highest point. I breached the exosphere. But I found there was no point When I saw you weren’t here.

When I came back down, you were gone without a trace; With my head down to the ground, over you, I had fawned Before I realized that I had no time to waste. I got up mighty quick and went a distance, long, wh’n I found you in th’ clouds Floating far up above I heard satisfying sounds And I swear I fell in love.

The Protagonist Reflects on Recent Events in his Life*

Often, I do pray to be a better man than I do see Standing there in front of me. Mirrored truths to set us free; reflections leave me unhappy. The world is cruel to fools like me.

A million thoughts race through my head, all because I think of you. A thousand loving memories remembered ‘cause I think of you. All I want is your loving, all because I think of you. A warm embrace that I do feel in thinking about hugging you. Never felt that way before**, until I started loving you.***

When angels fall asleep, must they all go up to heaven? When angels fall asleep, do they ever come back down? What am I? A man that cries tears that seem so tepid. What am I, again? It seems the world will forever frown.

I know you’re not coming back, And I know all the pain you had, And I know you’re not coming down. I know I’ll never be there.

What am I? So weak that I should feel so insignificant. Why’s existence bleak so that I can’t perform a stunt? Anxiety comes over me and I become decrepit. Angels that are set free and the truth remains so blunt.

Never felt this way before; now I can’t stop loving you. A cold embrace that I did feel the last time I spent hugging you. All I want is your loving, but now you’re gone. I think of you. A thousand loving memories remembered ‘cause I think of you. A million thoughts race through my head, all because I think of you. And I can’t help to think of you; all I need and want is you.

* Written for a friend from my high school years. ** I was listening to the National again yesterday, and I realized that this line might be from a song of theirs. However, it is not. I might have imagined this line as being lyrics from their song “Demons.” ***This portion was written as a bit of an exercise for Valentine’s day. However, I found that I could fit it in as part of this song, and so it is included.
