Kinderhook Plates proved to be a hoax. It was a test designed by a man who wanted to expose Joseph Smith as a fraud. It worked. The Church until the 1980s claimed The Kinderhook Plates as further proof that Joseph Smith was a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.

Kinderhook Plates Poster

This poster was put out by the Mormon church newspaper, and a copy was owned by Joseph Smith. It was later donated by his wife Emma, as the note at the top reads. In the text, it is stated that the plated would be translated into a sequel comparable to the Book of Mormon. Given that Joseph had a copy of this publication, and it was folded as if carried around for display, it is clear that he believed the plates were real and had been fooled by a hoax.
