(King avriel)
“my father never had a father... but he did his best...learning as he went along...what did i expect from him? i never could have said...i held him on a pedestal...the very first boy that i loved took his anger out on me...so did the next two or three...he didn’t understand the world and why it made him feel so weak, when he wasn’t allowed to weep...”
such a raw, honest, and open song.....absolutely beautiful...i’m so grateful for music like this....to be bare and vulnerable...to open your soul to others...and just by listening, i feel the strength to be more open and honest with myself...

SURVEYSxTEN: Finding J. Cole's Aaliyah for Dreamville
Yesterday we posted an article from XXL discussing J. Cole's interview with Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97, specifically the segment surrounding his label Dreamville and how he was looking for "that Aaliyah type or that Missy type that [he] can put that Timberland touch on and really give [his] sound to." But who could that be? And I still stand by what I wrote previously: The Next Aaliyah?!? That's a TALL order for any R&B singer, signed or unsigned. Remember when Jay Z said Memphis Bleek would be the next Jay Z? One could only fold under the pressure! But regardless, we took to some of our favorite signees and non-signees, pretended to play A&R for a day, and asked a few fellow Midwest Marauders who they would sign for the league of Dreamvillains. Check em out!

The list (in no particular order):
1. King avriel
As recommended by Nah Right/Columbus Alive Columnist Paul Meara
Why: Her voice is amazing, her music is great. She is pretty.
Why Not: Her only vice is that she's kind of out of the norm of a mainstream appeal so while FADER and Vice may love her, others may not.
TENxTEN Proof:
2. Jhene Aiko
As recommended by It's .KOM Rapper T.O.
Why: Her relation to rap and her sound
Why Not: She's just missing the big co-sign from another woman (Beyonce, nicki, Alicia key, etc)
TENxTEN Proof:
3. Rochelle Jordan
As recommended by TENxTEN Senior Editor Cotrell Loftin
Why: Has the original sound and style without trying to be Aaliyah. Girl is all around dope.
Why Not: She doesn't have a tremendous amount of buzz.
TENxTEN Proof:
4. SZA
As recommended by Yung 'n' Official Rapper F.A.M.E.
Why: She has a slight street appeal with a very unique but different sound.
Why Not: May not be formatted for big lights , seems content with a big fanbase that doesn't mind her being lowkey. Also technically already the "Aaliyah" of TDE.
TENxTEN Proof:
5. Sevyn Streeter
As recommended by rapper and overall Midwest Marauder, DC King of Hearts
Why: Her voice, body type, and style have been compared to that of Baby Girl, mainly [through] her song "It Won't Stop"
Why Not: While she does have these comparisons, it's going to be increasingly difficult for her to truly break out while being under Chris Brown's tutelage. High profile artists signing relatively new artists does not always pan out the way the latter wants it to. With one album down making a small buzz for her, she has a long way to go
TENxTEN Proof:
6. Lorine Chia
As recommended by Rapper Jéan P the MC
Why: Great songwriter, original
Why Not: People may assume that she can stay in one lane.
TENxTEN Proof:
7. Kelly Rowland
As recommended by Singer Raven Seiara
Why: Their range is about the same. Not too many runs and they keep it simple.
Why Not: She's not as popular and she doesnt have the tom boy style. She's a lot more feminine.
TENxTEN Proof:
8. 10ille (Tennille)
As recommended by TENxTEN Editor-In-Chief Nolan Alexander
Why: Very original sound, with the airy-sung vocals and all. She sounds great with rappers, so I imagine her and Cole on a joint would be straight flex.
Why Not: Inconsistenties on releasing new music, which ultimately affects her fan base also. I have this girl's Bronx Zoo project from a few years ago which is AMAZING, but since then she's all but vanished from the music circles.
TENxTEN Proof:
9. Kilo Kish
As recommended by TENxTEN Editor-In-Chief Nolan Alexander
Why: Kilo Kish is mad quirky cute and she knows how to use her soft voice over heavy 808s, which is not an easy feat. Plus she kinda carries that I'm-inocent-but-not-so-innocent look almost as well as (dare I say it) Aaliyah.
Why Not: Some of her tracks are abstract and a bit more out there than others. Maybe that's preference and subjectivity on my part, but if Cole World wants to be the metaphorical Timbaland to Kilo's metaphorical Aaliyah, that means she's gotta be open to tailoring her sound around the Dreamville roster.
TENxTEN Proof:
10. Lucille Ghatti
As recommended by TENxTEN Editor-In-Chief Nolan Alexander
Why: Here's why: Lucille Ghatti is a hottie. It wouldn't rhyme if it were not true! But in all seriousness, she's got this tom boyish charm to her that's reminiscent of Aaliyah. On top of it her airy vocals about love and drugs compliment much of the Dreamville Roster and what they rap about.
Why Not: Fanbase, fan base. She got a lot of underground supporters but outside of that circle many may or may not like her sound on a mainstream scale.
TENxTEN Proof:
And there you have it! J. Cole not only has a list of amazing potential singers to put on Dreamville, but we also just made ten weeks' worth of Woman Crush Wednesdays and music for y'all to check out!
Thanks to EVERYONE who participated!
Peace.
