King Dome Pendant Lights by Dowel Jones for Woodmark
Thought Pegs: 4/4/13
Since I have three sections of ENGL 102, I teach one section on Mondays/Wednesdays and two other sections on Tuesdays/Thursdays. So today my T/Th sections tackled the "What do we get out of sports?" question, along with some brainstorming stuff about Seattle-related sports memories and experiences.
I got a few thought pegs from today to nail down:
Sport as one of the central cathartic experiences for our culture - in scenes where emotions are purged in somewhat Aristotelian terms.
Sport as a frontier for the human body. That is, an exploratory field for the achievement that is possible for the highly disciplined body.
One student spoke of another student meeting all his local sport deities in her restaurant job here on the Eastside of the Seattle metro area.
Another student spoke about coincidentally picking up a co-worker's Mariners season-tickets to coincidentally catch King Felix's perfect game last season.
A number of students spoke about watching footage of the King Dome being demolished and their hearts with it.
One student spoke about the 12th Man identity of being a Seahawks fan.
Another student spoke about playing hoops against Sherman Alexie in smalltown Washington State.
I'm trying to get my students to connect some of the "big things" we get out of sports to a local experience involving sports here in Seattle for their first essay project. Today the pre-drafting brainstorming commenced! Next week will be more topic development. I'm rubbing my hands with excitement.
