Shoot for the Heart (Ivar One-Shot)

A/n: Yes, I'm back with another One-shot because this is becoming my coping mechanism for life now apparently XD I'm thinking of doing like a One-shot every second night and then updating WIPs in between. Also, I'm going to be tagging people in these and I'll also create a Masterlist on the weekend of all the one-shots I've done so far.

Anyway, enjoy this, and please let me know what you think of this! <3 As always, there is no real plot to this and everything is made up as I go

Summary: Ivar meets an archer that can hit anything with pinpoint accuracy.

There had been rumors of your marksmanship, stories of the Earl's daughter being able to shoot down anything from any distance. Some say that you can even shoot the center of a target blindfolded.

Of course, all those stories were tested after your arrival in Kattegat with your father and his army that have come for the Summer raids to England. Ivar watched, obviously, but thought nothing of it and that it was nothing more than skill. Your skill to shoot with pinpoint accuracy is no more special than that of the strongest fighter in the Heathen Army. It's all just practice. And it's pathetic how everyone crowds around you, begging you to show them more of your 'skill'.

Still, his eyes always end up on you during the raid. He finds himself looking at you to distract himself from the rocking waves while on the boats, watching you walk around the camp with your bow fixed in your hand after settling in England. And the last time he sees you before the battle on the hills before the city of York, leading a group of archers in front of the rest of the army.

Ivar almost forgets about you in the wake of the battle, commanding parts of the Army at different times. All part of his plan, you see. When he sees the second wave of Saxons headed their way, Ivar's smile falls off his face and his heart sinks in his chest. He didn't think they would be so clever as to divide their army into two, saving the second half for when the first half is almost spent.

But then, before he can despair, a cloud of arrows appears in the sky and then rains down on the second coming of Saxons. Ivar can tell which arrow is your from the red tether you always tie at the end of your arrows. He had seen you do that before the battle. And he watches the arrow sink into the chest of one of the Saxon warriors.

You emerge over a hill with the group of archers that had followed you and Ivar remember now how your father had said that it is a strategy you like to use; to hide and attack from a place unseen as a backup to the army you fight for.

Arrows fly through the air, whistling as they go before sinking with a thud in their target that then screams before falling to the ground.

An arrow with the familiar red tether flies past Ivar's shoulder, hitting a soldier that had eyes on him. Ivar turns his head around as sees you making your way towards him. "Still think I can't hit again I aim for?" you tease, smirking at him as you reach for another arrow.

"When have I said anything like that?"

"Your brother's told me you said that to them," you mention, standing by his side as you pull the string back, aim for your next target. Ivar rolls his eyes and looks forward, trying to predict who you will hit before you release your arrow.

It lands right in the chest of a Saxon soldier not too far away, but still too far away for Ivar to have reached him with a throw of his ax. "It is nothing but years of practice and training," Ivar mentions, looking back at you as you reach for yet another arrow.

"Perhaps. But I think of it as I was born with this skill. Just as you were born with the skill to lead and to outwit those who oppose you," you reply, looking up at him with a flirtatious smile on your face. "I'm not the only one people tell stories about, Ivar the Boneless. I've heard just as much about you and you have of me. Maybe even a bit more."

Ivar stares at you, his tongue running over his lips before he tucks his lower lip between his teeth. You release another arrow. And Ivar notices, like all the other arrows you have shot so far, this one hits the Saxon straight in the chest again. "You aim for the chest."

"I aim for the heart," you correct, your eyes shifting to him again as you blindly ready another arrow. You've done it so many times, you could probably do this in your sleep. "It is the most important part of a person."

And without looking away from Ivar, you raise your bow and shoot another arrow, keeping your eyes locked with his. He doesn't have to look to know that you've hit another target because from what he's seen, you can indeed hit again.
