I never wanted to be 'the sick girl' the same way I never wanted to 'the Asian girl.' I'd rather be 'the nice girl' or 'the smart girl' or 'the kind girl.' I just kept telling myself that one day a few years from then my hair was going to grow out, and I was going to feel great, and when I met someone they would have no idea that I ever had cancer. It's funny though, because I really didn't want cancer to define me, and by being so determined to get past that it completely created the person that I am now. That fighting spirit really shaped me. What's also interesting is that Ken Watanabe, our king, and I didn't even realize until like two weeks into rehearsal that we both survived the same kind of cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The night of our first preview he gave me a card and all it said on it was 'Survivors.'
