Argo has been my best friend for over 23 years! He is my “horse of a different colour”: he started out red, and unexpectedly dappled out grey, and now is finally settled on being white.
He was one of the Mustangs rescued from the White Sands Missile Base in 1994. I grew up with him, and slowly gentled him through play and grooming. One day… of the many times I would lay around with him, I sat on him (like I often did) and he stood up! From that point on I was accepted any time I crawled on him (before I never bothered unless he was on the ground.. it was more of a silly thing than a riding thing, I rode a pony and my Mum’s thoroughbred at the time, so Argo was just my buddy at the time.) I would just hold on to his mane when he would walk around and through some time we were able to communicate. I learned that I was able to ask him to change directions with just a bit of light leg pressure.
We have had a ton of adventures together. We’ve gone on to do barrels, flags, poles, parades, camping, trail riding, racing, swimming, archery, jumping, and even worked some cattle. That doesn’t even cover the countless adventures we had being “Xena and Argo” as well as the endless field/fence checks, and rides we have had at the lake and all over the ranch. We’ve really had so many kinds of adventures together. He has been giving our niece lessons for the last couple of years on top of everything he’s done, he’s such an amazing guy.
This old man means everything to me. I’m so lucky to have known him this long. -V
