At first, she’d just been wallowing at the bottom of the ocean. Her gem gave out and her wings vanished into vapor, leaving her without the safe distance of air. The safe distance of water, of walking into the ocean until the water level was over her head was the next best alternative.

The crushing darkness of waves and salt water wasn’t as bad as she thought. At least that was getting better. Just when she thought she was maybe feeling better –wanting to see sunlight again, she walked out of the ocean and gasped.

It was dark, for one. And for another, her pockets were empty. Her phone was still nestled in the sand beside her shoes and hydroflask, but the item she’d decided would be safe in her pocket was not safe at all.

“Hey—” Lapis wrung water from her hair and looked around before spotting someone. She called to them, looking wildly around the sand, shells, and pebbles that made up the beach. “Have you seen a rock around here?”
