Malignaggi vs. Judah: The Battle of Brooklyn
By: Ashley King
Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah come together, both coming off of losses-- Malignaggi to Adrien Broner and Judah losing to Danny Garcia. They to come head to head, not for a title, but for bragging rights.
As the main event commences, Maliganggi's face on the left side starts looking red right out of the gate of the first punches thrown.
Both Malignaggi and Zab had their legs tangled and Zab hit Malignaggi and it was ruled a knock down. Maligniaggi looking clearly upset and tried to plead his case to the referee.
"He got you." said referee Mike Ortega
Judah starts to gain some control of the fight for the rest of the round. Malignaggi tried to get in some three punch combinations which a lot were blocked.
By the fourth round, Malignaggi starts to get back into his game plan by controlling the momentum of the fight and outboxing Judah. He has been the aggressor in this fight which a lot of people were not expecting.
"I find it fascinating that Judah is doing the boxing and Malignaggi is the one coming forward." says color commentator Steve Farhood.
Malignaggi has kept the gas in his tank and he has dictated most of the rounds going forward. His jab is not very powerful but they are connecting and Judah has not had much opportunity to get his punches in as often.
Zab Judah has been getting in some nice jabs but looks somewhat lethargic. He seems to know exactly what punches are coming from Malignaggi but he just can't get out of the way in time or can't throw the punches as accurately. Malignaggi more often than not, has a greater punches landed percentage than his opponents. He is has been behind the jab, feinting and attacking for most of the rounds.
As some boos emerge from the crowd, the commentators start to wonder why Zab has not been able to come in to engage and become more active during these rounds. He doesn't seem like he wants to be in the ring.
By the final round there is a glimpse of activity shown by Zab Judah, trying to give the last piece of energy he has but still falls short. By the last seconds of the round, there was a some aggression but the fight was over!
116-111, 117-110, 117-110 for a unanimous decision for Paulie Malignaggi and gains an official Champion of Brooklyn belt.
