Would it be too much to ask for moments with their babies? 👉🏻👈🏻
Hakari and his baby ૮꒰ ྀི◜๑◝ ꒱ა (the link mentioned here) cw: pure fluff note: this was fun but i struggled with it a lot, ngl 🥲…guys, I think I suck at domestic scenes. the request says “babies” but i just couldn’t make that work, I’m really sorry :( i feel like I don’t know enough about childcare to make this all authentic with more than one child involved.
Core Memory 1 - Car Ride
What a man, what a man, what a man, what a mighty good man…
The song plays quietly in the car, as it has for many, many weeks now. It seems to calm the baby. Interesting taste for a one-year-old, Kinji thinks every time.
His eyes stay on the road. The wiper arms interrupt his view every now and then as they sweep rainwater from the windshield.
Kinji has been driving for a while now, about four hours. The road from Tokyo to Kyoto is a long one. But it’s okay, because sometimes he allows himself to glance into the backseat.
His baby sits in his car seat, articulating wildly but silently as he tries to open his mouth. His little jaw moves slowly, clearly struggling with motor coordination. His chin and cheeks are shiny, reddish here and there. He’s trying so hard to get that piece of watermelon into his mouth.
Next to him, you lean against the baby’s seat, half-asleep, also munching on some fruit.
No one really talks.
It’s just a peaceful moment, also the baby’s first long drive, and his first time having a “picnic” in the car.
Kinji is internally hyping himself up for the gathering in Tokyo. He likes being on good terms with the current Kamo clan. It means he can run his business in peace, while his wife can return to the estate without anyone saying a bad word. And besides, his kid is going to be a great sorcerer one day. Kinji is sure of it. Things are perfect in that moment.
Core Memory 2 - How to make Mommy happy (after making her super mad)
“Alright, buddy, you’re watchin’ a professional at work, so pay attention,” Kinji says to his son as he places a big bouquet of flowers into the vase on the table, his other arm keeping the baby cradled against his chest.
He struggles to get all the stems into the narrow opening without tipping the vase over, but somehow manages.
“You wanna watch Daddy get his ass handed to him?” he asks, setting the baby into a high chair. The question is self-deprecating, tinged with genuine anxiety, but mostly amusement at his own stupidity.
The baby claps his hands cheerfully, giggling and babbling, as if he’s genuinely enjoying Kinji’s predicament.
“Oh, I see how it is, always on Mommy’s side. Such a mama’s boy…”
For the next half hour, Kinji goes full house-husband mode: dishes, cleaning, laundry, vacuuming, while the little guy in the chair suckles on a sippy cup. He seems almost entertained by the sight of his father moving around in mild panic.
“See,” Kinji explains, setting a pot and a pan on the stove to start dinner, “if you ever do something real bad, you gotta go all in. Can’t let luck decide your fate because when it comes to Mommy, luck doesn’t exist.”
What actually caused Kinji to lock in this hard, the baby will never know. What he will remember is the silly look on his father’s face as he does his best to make up for his mistakes.
House cleaned. Food on the table. Flowers arranged. Some fancy-looking present prepared.
Kinji is more than ready to beg for forgiveness.
It’ll be a very useful lesson once the baby reaches the age where he starts doing stupid stuff of his own.
Core Memory 3 - The Steak
“God, you’re just like your father…” you mumble, watching your son fight for what’s left of the T-bone steak, gnawing at the meat, occasionally the bone itself. His face, his hands, the light green bib over his chest, it’s all smeared with steak juices.
His small fingers are more practiced now, but the steak is still too big for him, slipping the wrong way every time. It’s his first steak, and both you and Kinji can tell he absolutely adores the taste. He’s ecstatic.
He giggles happily, occasionally searching your face to check your reaction.
“That’s a compliment if I’ve ever heard one,” Kinji snorts, leaning back in his chair like he’s won something. He lifts his glass in a lazy toast toward the baby.
Soft grunts and growls are muffled against the bone as the baby manages to chew off a decent chunk.
You reach over with a napkin, half-heartedly trying to wipe your son’s cheeks, but he dodges you with a delighted squeal, twisting just enough to smear more grease along his jaw. He laughs at his own cleverness, eyes bright, mouth shiny, triumphant.
“He’s very brave,” Kinji remarks. “Defying Mommy like that. Very anti-authority.”
“Mama…”
“Yes, Mama,” Kinji laughs. “I’d be very careful if I were you. Mama will be mad.”
“Kin—” You throw the napkin at him and grab a new one, successfully wiping your baby’s face this time.
“I won’t be mad. Don’t listen to him.”
The baby laughs, grimacing slightly when the napkin tickles his nostrils. He watches you, then Kinji, then you again, eyes curious.
Then he reaches for the bone again, not to eat it, but to press it to his cheek and hug it like a plushie.
He’s entered that phase where he wants to sleep with the most random objects imaginable. So far, he’s smuggled a rock, your sock, fridge magnets, and Kinji’s wallet into his bed. The last one caused quite a ruckus in the Hakari–Kamo household, Kinji carries a lot of cash.
“Oh god, we’re not doing this again…” you sigh, rubbing your forehead.
Your son just laughs, clearly enjoying how easily he can exasperate his parents.
Core Memory 4 - The Blanket Fort
“Listen, boss, this is not how construction works, you gotta have the right angle,” Kinji’s voice comes out muffled, teeth gripping the edge of a blanket as his hands secure other blankets to various pieces of furniture. All for the baby’s amusement.
He sits nearby, watching Kinji work, babbling nonsense. It could be encouragement. It could be criticism.
He taps his palms against the carpet impatiently, gesticulating wildly.
You’re asleep on the floor, most likely having nodded off while sorting baby clothes, unaware that a soft fortress is slowly rising around you.
Kinji finally lets the last blanket fall into place, draping it carefully over the back of the couch so it doesn’t slip. He freezes, holding his breath like a man defusing a bomb.
It stays.
“Yes,” he whispers, pure victory, before slowly crawling inside.
The baby squeals, abandoning all patience and army-crawling after him, blanket edges brushing his hair. It stands up in many places from the electrostatic forces.
Inside, the space is dim and warm, smelling faintly of fabric softener and baby shampoo.
Kinji settles on his side, propped on one elbow. He watches his son wobble closer, hands slapping the carpet, face lighting up like he’s discovered a secret world.
“Welcome to headquarters,” Kinji murmurs. “No girls allowed.”
The baby blinks.
“…Except Mommy,” Kinji adds quickly, glancing toward you, still asleep, breathing slow and even.
The baby crawls over to you instead, planting his hands on your arm as if testing whether you’re real. He pats your sleeve, then your cheek.
Kinji watches. In this moment, he feels nothing but gratitude for how things turned out.
“Y’know,” he murmurs, mostly to himself, “you’re gonna remember this. Not the details but the feeling.”
The baby lets out a happy little huff and plops down, back against Kinji’s chest. Kinji instinctively wraps an arm around him, steadying him, his hand fitting perfectly over the baby’s round belly.
Outside the fort, rain taps against the windows. Inside, it’s quiet, safe.
The baby yawns, his head tipping back to knock gently against Kinji’s collarbone. His eyelids flutter, then give up.
After a while, Kinji reaches out with his free hand and gently tucks the blanket closer around you, careful not to wake you.
“One day we’re gonna tell ya the craziest story about how we got together.”
