Overview of the Kinzua Bridge
The Kinzua Bridge, also known as the Kinzua Viaduct, was a historic railroad bridge located in McKean County, Pennsylvania. Completed in 1882, it was celebrated as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" due to its impressive height of 301 feet and length of 2,052 feet.
Collapse of the Bridge
On July 21, 2003, a tornado struck the Kinzua Bridge, causing significant destruction. The tornado, classified as F1, had wind speeds exceeding 94 mph. It resulted in the collapse of 11 out of the 20 bridge towers in less than 30 seconds. The failure was attributed to corroded anchor bolts that could not withstand the lateral forces exerted by the tornado.
Aftermath and Current Status
Following the tornado, the bridge was deemed unsafe and closed to all pedestrian and railroad traffic. In 2002, restoration efforts had begun, but these were interrupted by the tornado. Today, the remnants of the Kinzua Bridge are part of the Kinzua Bridge State Park, which features a skywalk that allows visitors to view the ruins and learn about the bridge's history. The skywalk is currently closed for renovations, expected to be completed by fall 2027.
