“You guys remember when Dangan Ronpa was like…good? Had compelling...”
As a babby to the series (who finally bought the first game to try) I've always wondered in what way it descends it badness? Is it taking things that are insane too seriously or something?
Nah, after SDR2 Chunsoft realized that most people are in it for the characters rather than the plot, and then gave us the DR3 anime, which gave us a lot of Nothing screentime for the SDR2 cast (who people LOVED), and more Marketable Characters in the Future Arc, including one (1) explicitly gay man, who is an aggressive fuckwit and also dies shortly after he’s outed in the story. The plots there are dumb and contrived, only really exist to either throw the theorists/shippers a bone or show how Neat and Cool the new characters are.
In NDRV3, it’s more of a return to form with a formal plot, setting, and characters, thank god, with a legit lesbian (SHES NOT BI BECAUSE THE WRITERS WANTED MEN TO KNOW THAT THEY COULD FUCK HER TOO ITS SERIOUSLY NOT REPRESENTATION ITS A LESBOPHOBIC TROPE IM A BISEXUAL AND *I* KNOW THIS SHUT U P) who ALSO dies, another gay dude (also horrible, also dies), and is...way more obnoxious plotwise than the other games. There’s entirely too much fanservice compared to the first two games, the trials are longer and more convoluted than ever, the grand plot twists are meta-narrative horseshit that kodaka is clearly stroking himself off to about how GENIUS he is, and I complain about it a lot, but Komatsuzaki’s stiff, cold, weirdly horny drawings really overstay their welcome. Maybe I’m being too hard on it, but it’s just...jesus.
Hopefully that game was only so bad because Chunsoft wanted to milk the cash cow more, and hopefully that’ll mean Kodaka’s departure from them will result in, like, having good stories again.
