Mike settled on Fred’s back, planting his hands tightly on the Ponyta’s reigns as he waited for the checkered flag signaling the race’s start to wave. He’d been challenged by a second year student he recognized from one of his Chemistry classes, Jeff Sterling. The boy was sitting uncomfortably bareback on a Stantler beside him, Mike almost winced as he thought how uncomfortable that was sure to be for him after the race was over. He couldn’t dwell on it too long as the referee swung the flag in front of him and Fred was galloping off.
