Know why soil matters.
Our very own Neil Boyd, vice president of the Feathered Pipe Foundation Board, was recently featured in Grains West publication in an article titled, “The Peace Process: Progressive Far-North Farmer’s Shed Region’s Frontier Reputation.” 🌾 Boyd lives and farms in Fairview, Alberta with balance and moderation, an approach that has delivered agronomic results as well as contentment. Each workday begins with freeform yoga and easygoing CBC Radio music program Mornings with Saroja Coelho. In this restorative routine, he pays attention to the physical complaints that come with farm labour. “After I finish my yoga practice, I feel great,” he said. “I go on with my day feeling more flexible, and your mind feels more open. You need those things to be a farmer.” Peace farms tend toward the extremes of organic and intensive, whereas Boyd describes himself as “a radical centre.” With a lifetime interest in holistic farming, Boyd gravitates to sustainable practices. He has carried out continuous soil improvement since he adopted a no-till, low-input strategy in 1996 and began seeding through straw with a hybrid drill. He now uses a single-chute drill, does not disc or harrow and rarely enters the field between seeding and harvest. Boyd’s triple bottom line philosophy is agriculture should ideally have social, environmental and economic benefit. He shares this outlook with the Quivira Coalition, a Santa Fe, NM, organization that promotes resilience in agricultural landscapes. At the group’s annual conference, he picks and chooses practices he can apply. He believes Peace Country farmers tend to be ahead of the curve in adoption of new technology because land here has historically been cheaper to buy and rent than in the south. This has allowed farmers to utilize advanced equipment and new technologies sooner. Thank you, Neil, for the way you love the land and for leading by example what it looks like to be in right relationship with the plants, animals, people and places that give us life. #progressivefarming #regenerativefarming #kisstheground #soilhealth #farmers #farmersfootprint #farmersfeedtheworld #yogi https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRUaVGPwhw/?utm_medium=tumblr
Pulling out the throwback picture for this week’s Dandelion Effect Podcast episode: Regenerating Our Food, Soil and Community with Jim Barngrover. Jim has over four decades of experience in organic gardening, farming and marketing local and fairtrade products. In 1987, he co-founded @timelessnaturalfood — a company dedicated to alternative agriculture through organic annual legumes like peas and lentils. What began as a venture between four friends has put Montana on the map as America’s largest producer of lentils! In this conversation, Jim walks us through his journey from farmer’s son to ROTC student, activist, gardener, prison horticulture director, and back to farmer. In his young adult life, he moved from Wyoming to Montana in search of a more progressive existence and serendipitously stumbled into the Feathered Pipe Ranch after meeting India Supera in Missoula. Here, he felt more connected to the Earth and the land than he ever had before, and it sparked the inspiration for a life of service both to human health and environmental health. Jim speaks to the chemically-dependent industrial farming complex in America, the reasons why he farms with organic and regenerative practices and encourages others to do the same, the lessons that he’s learned from working in harmony with the land, and how lentils work to reduce erosion, build organic matter, and provide natural nitrogen fertilizer for other crops. He’s hopeful about how many young farmers are making the shift to more sustainable practices and emphasizes how much power consumers have in the fight to change our food systems. 🌿 Find this so interesting, an agricultural and farm area in China was completely withered and dried out by modern agriculture and chemical pesticides leading to total poverty, using regeneration, old fashioned techniques, not disturbing the earth too much with violent machinery, cattle free grazing (we are already doing well in NL), without chemical pesticides and diversity, nature returned and came back completely. By placing cattle in pens, the CO2 increases, by allowing cattle to graze freely on grass, soil and pasture, you reduce the CO2. Nice documentary where I learned this on Netflix, "kiss the ground" This example is already a solution to many problems, especially areas that have become completely desert as a result. How beautiful is that, our planet, our nature, the future of our children It is a big change, such simple basic things can do a lot good 🔥🌍🌱 #kisstheground #regeneration #agriculture # co2 #nature #planetearth #earth #planet #nature #farm #soil #ground #grass #koolstof #future #children #pure #solution #dreams #health #sustainable #natuur (bij Takoda) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLmU_BTAs4K/?igshid=gbuklyflb7ww
