Thanks to the invitation from OUT OF STOCK, a HK-based furniture design consultancy and store, for a chat with the creative Japanese team behind the successful minimalistic brand KITONO. The design house specialises in the use of wood in their works, creating subtle yet quality furniture products.

1. How did you start your career in furniture design?
When I saw Hans Wegner‘s furniture, I have determined to be a furniture designer in the future.
2. For all things wood in KITONO, what do you see and feel in this material?
We use beech wood which characteristics is elegant with modest grain.
3. Is there a specific kind of wood that you are drawn to? Which one and why?
Beech wood and black cherry wood are matching well for KITONO, both are elegant and good for females.
4. Your designs are somewhat minimalistic. Can you tell us the key design elements in such a clean aesthetic?
It’s timeless design which can blend into daily life.
5. From where would you start your design process? Materials or design inspirations?
We start our design process from both materials and design inspirations as we aim to make furniture that is elegant and good for females.
6. What is your favourite tool in the making of these furniture pieces?
We have no special tools for design. We collect information on SNS which focuses on lifestyle, and we also analyse the feedback from customers coming to our showrooms.
7. Your favorite corner of your design studio?
Desks in our office and the factory for producing prototypes.
8. Please describe yourself in 3 words.
We love woods, we love manufacturing and we know very much about women’s mind.
9. Do you have any projects coming up?
We are planning to showcase KITONO furniture series at the next IFFT in November this year. Also, we are considering to produce a limited version for the doors in which graphics will be designed by young designers and our partners.
