Think of Mark Twain's Huck Finn. Twain used language and stereotypes to subtly poke fun at the racists of his time. Should I ban the book because it has the N word? Nonsense.

I can’t believe I had forgotten about the Christina Ricci one. I don’t know whether to be excited that Zelda is so popular or worried that they are going to ruin her story. I find that a lot of people making fictionalized (or sometimes even non fictionalized) movies or books forget that the people were real people. The writers, directors, etc want to sensationalize instead of simply telling what really happened.

She looks nothing like Zelda (and kudos to The Guardian for using an actual pic of Zelda!), but she’s a fine actress so can probably pull it off.

I read a few different articles about this and all of the ones I saw used an actual picture of Zelda which was pretty amazing. One article mentioned that Keira Knightley was originally in talks and I wonder how she would be as Zelda.

I actually think there’s something to it. Remember what she says about having a girl? I hope she’ll be stupid and pretty. There’s not much self-worth there. In Jay’s eyes she might see a better Daisy. But in the end, she is who she is. Aimless.

With my feminist glasses on I see that line as a commentary on women’s roles in the 1920s since it was Zelda who originally said it, albeit she was drugged up and had just given birth when she said it. But anyways I take that line as it being that women weren’t valued for their intelligence, they were only valued for their looks. Scott probably didn’t mean it that way though.

Daisy was not a gold digger. She came from a family of some prominence and wealth, though not as wealthy as Tom. The point of the book is that the rich are different from you and I. Jay was poor. “Rich girls don’t marry poor boys” Daisy says to Jay.

Thank you! I was afraid I was misremembering it when I reread it less than a year ago. I guess some people will find any reason, even made up ones, to be mean about Daisy.

Hi! Re: the person who enjoyed The Tudors. I think they might enjoy the 1970's mini-series The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Elizabeth R. Both are just fantastic, and the costuming is far more correct for the periods if you're interested in that sort of thing. There was also a movie called Mary of Scotland starring Vanessa Redgrave which, as I recall, was pretty good. But watching Glenda Jackson chew the scenery as Elizabeth is wonderful, and the entire cast of Henry VIII is terrific. Kathie
