🎶 i've gotta get out of this wasteland, 'cause this wasteland ain't home!
⏯ NOW PLAYING: Dreamland by Fox Stevenson
for @mcyt-jukebox-bonanza, featuring Kakujo from Kakucraft and Lalnable Hector from Flux Buddies! wait what
an incredibly long explanation under the cut:
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER KJFB.
as of later this month, it will have been 5 years since the original version of this artwork. i'd gotten out of a pretty rough situation, but one of the things that got me through it was a silly little crossover rp turned fanfic with Solar we called The Hec and Jo Show. Solar normally writes Kakujo and i normally write Flux Buddies, so for fun we swapped who wrote who and whatever happened happened.
what happened was that i made an entire PMV about it, just goes to show that you never can tell. or "the KJFB Dreamland PMV".
i knew Solar had the panning shot as their lockscreen, but i was still startled to see it in person half a year later. i kept saying "man, i should redraw that", especially as the years kept going by and my art improved by leaps and bounds, but i was always worried i wouldn't do it justice.
well! i did it. still not sure i did it justice. there's a lot of details about it i don't like, but tbh i was stressing myself out over trying to get it to be Perfect and i did make drastic changes such as "actually drawing fullbodies so you could tell who the characters are out of context" and "looking up a clouds tutorial and bonking my head against it for a couple hours".
oh, right, fun fact. the lettering here is the same images from the PMV-- i still have the layer files, so i grabbed them. i also tried to size it for phones but that might not have worked, but i did discover that like three other people Also had the original as their phone lockscreens. eheh. maybe i should change mine, too.
Lalnable Hector's not above unlikely team-ups out of necessity. Teaming up with somebody whose first instinct to solve any problem is "do dark magic about it" might've put him in over his head, but he was already planning to plunge into the deep end on his own. At least this way he has someone to show him the ropes... and besides, it's too late to back out now.
(or, Kakujo finds Hector and decides they are now BFFs.)
this was my first collab writing with @betweenlands and it's still something i love a lot! yall might remember this as being the story behind the dreamland PMV. previously it was only available as a google docs link, but with the power of "i am incredibly bored and tired and already uploading stuff to ao3" it's now in a hopefully more accessible format!
featuring: bad decisions, kakujo being called a himbo, lalnabrain hellctor, everyone’s favourite spooky reject echo specimen, and a surprisingly heartwarming friendship between a supervillain and just some guy
content warnings: dark magic and consequences thereof, vague body horror, emotional manipulation, references to permadeath (and one occurrence to someone that totally had it coming)
i reread The Hec And Jo Show today and really wanted to draw, uh, hec n jo. i wasn’t super happy with how i drew kakujo in the dreamland pmv, and it’s been EONS since i’ve last drawn lalnable, so two birds one stone, right?
i really love the start of h&j where hector is trying to be as intimidating as physically possible and it’s going right over kakujo’s head. their dynamic is loads of fun overall and i really wanna do more with this wacky crossover because it’s got SO much potential
here’s some panels from “just goes to show that you never can tell” that im really proud of!
ill take the moment here to summarize what’s going on in the PMV and the story it’s based off:
after Mother starts to target Five and tries to take control of them, Lalnable Hector gets into dark magic so he can fight her off. unexpected help comes in the form of Kakujo, who just kinda showed up one day and happened to have a base nearby; Kakujo helps Hector out with some magic stuff, and then learns more about the situation in Vindicate me!-- namely, the existence of Drei / Specimen 3, and Hector’s memory issues.
turns out Kakujo is really powerful when it comes to dark magic (to the point where he barely qualifies as human and is more of just... a fucked up dark entity now), so he just... gets the wonderful idea to try and summon somebody that could maybe help untangle the mess that is Hector’s memory. it doesn’t go to plan. specifically, he accidentally summons a demon taking the appearance & personality of Xephos, who decides the best way to jog Hector’s memory is through emotional manipulation and being an asshole. Drei doesnt take kindly to that.
Kakujo feels guilty for doing something stupid, but him and Hector end up becoming friends anyway and are now buddies! so that’s how the KJFB crossover properly “starts”: some dark magic himbo from another universe decides to help the resident mad scientist sell his soul.
add-on to this post: here’s the panning shot in full! with and without text ^^ also the cropped version, which was already in the other post but i wanted to include it anyway. and also the shot immediately before bc it just looks nice.
