All Macklin ever wanted was to be taken seriously. His dad didn't care when he was in pain or didn't feel comfortable with a decision he had made. He was dismissed when he talked about his feelings and only ever told he'd grow out of it, that if he wants to be a professional athlete one day he had to work trough the hard times and ignore how much they hurt. And Macklin was mad at his brothers for never having to go trough the same treatment from their father. He shouldn't be mad, he knows it isn't their fault. But why him?
All Macklin ever wanted was to be taken seriously. Until he was surrounded by people who took every word he said as a statement. Who he couldn't make a joke around without having judging eyes on him because they didn't understand. People who would react to a friendly pat on the shoulder with a questioning look. People who wanted to use him for the money he would bring and nothing else.
All Macklin ever wanted was to be taken seriously. Not too seriously that people wouldn't understand his jokes. He wanted to be understood. For people to laugh at his jokes and tell him that his feelings were valid when he was upset. To get a hug when he needed it most and for people to not make fun of the things he liked.
All Macklin ever wanted was to be understood. When he complained to Toff about how their coaches decision hadn't felt right and Toff would simply listen and agree every now and then. When he lay crying in his bed, suffering from the expectations and Joe would come sit by his side and listen to him and give exactly the advice Macklin needed to hear. When he was mad after a lost game and his teammates would hug him in the changing room and then leave him to his own devices to work his feelings out, always offering a helping hand but never pushing.
All Macklin ever wanted was to be loved. When he sat in Will's car and they laughed so hard that their tummies hurt and there were tears in their eyes. When he shot the puck across the ice without having to look up, knowing exactly where Will would be, because he always was. When the interviewers asked Will about playing with Macklin and his face visibly lit up before he spoke fondly of him for minutes. When Will was always there to share a sentiment and join in on Macklin's complaints because he understood him.
All Macklin ever wanted was to be understood and loved. And Will was there to do exactly that. With or without words, Will understands Macklin and he loves him just how he is. Macklin doesn't have to work to deserve the love and attention, Will just gives it to him. Because he loves him. No ulterior motive, no judging, nothing. Just pure love and understanding. All Macklin had ever wanted.
