Redesigning some characters from one of my pet projects, upper images being the new designs. Also wanted to work on creating layers to my character designs.
First is Meiros, the Queen of the Wastes. Her previous design was lacking in terms of depicting her as a leader and important figure. I wanted to keep the feathered aspect of her cloak/coat and re-purposed the skulls, fashioning them into a sort of crown to denote her authority. I’ll be refining her weapon at a later date.
Next is Klessa, the protagonist in the second half of the story she takes place in, albeit in her older state. I had never actually decided on her older design and wanted to flesh it out more. Her aged design stems from her tutelage under Meiros after the death of her “mother” to gain enough strength to get her revenge on those responsible. I wanted to keep the elements of her younger design and keep her close to her engineer-esque roots, while adjusting it for her new more arid environments for the wasteland and mixing in elements from her “mother”. Her design is likely to be in a more constant state of flux as I try to better establish her identity as a character.
KLESSA - LIVE AT ROTA GALLERY (02-23-2011)
"Klessa is the best band." This is something I used to say to myself and to other people, and, listening back to this tape, I feel the statement still holds up, at least for myself. Klessa has not been an active band for about three years now, but when they were a thing, they were quite a thing to behold. Four core humans (and sometimes several other humans), who are all especially creative people in their own rights, made up the band, which originated New Paltz, New York, sometime around 2009. You might recognize the names of the folks in the band, related endeavors include No Better Than Apples, The Horse Museum, Holy Haunted Head, and Red Sled Choir. But Klessa all in all was its own special thing and the sounds these people made together are intricate and haunting and catchy and weird and magical. It's really hard to describe it all, and maybe I'm romanticizing a bit, but I don't believe that I am. The recording we have for you here today was captured live on tape at ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh, NY. At the time of writing, the future of ROTA Gallery is in question, but this recording was made when the organization was still very new, and residing inside of the walls of 19 Clinton Street. It was a much different time for everyone involved. It wasn't the first time Klessa came to Plattsburgh, it was the second or third, but it was the only time they came to ROTA. The recording is great, especially considering its boombox origins. Every sound is crisp and clear, all four voices, all of the instruments, the percussion, the rhythms... Klessa were especially adept when it came to rhythms and nuances in their songs, and all of the elements are in full effect on this tape. There are a few other sounds from Klessa that are still in the archives, and I'll share them at some point in time, but for now, enjoy this little piece of history. Bonus trivia: Klessa bought soup from the local food co-op before leaving town and needed some spoons, so I gave away four (maybe five?) of our spoons and for a long time we were really low on spoons in our apartment. Also, the name Klessa was picked at random, each band member picked letters and they were arranged into a word, but "Klessa" turned out to have deeper significance as a name than anyone really knew at that moment.
