Draco collapsed onto the floor of Snape’s office with a groan, his head screaming at him after failing to keep the man out of his head for the third time that hour.

“Your emotions are all over the place tonight, Draco,” Snape chided, whipping his robes back behind him as he crossed to the opposite side of the room. “Dwelling on a lover's spat or other trivial matters will be your end, you know this. You cannot waste your time getting pissed in Hogsmeade with Theodore Nott and scaring little Hufflepuffs when you can’t hold your liquor! Now, prepare your mind! You must concentrate.”

KMD0107 Writes Things

As so many of us do in the new year, I’ve found myself thinking about what I want to accomplish this next year.

Last year, I spent a lot of time reading about writing—and much less time actually writing.

One quiet milestone did happen: I finished a first draft of an original novel. It’s not ready for anyone else yet, but it exists.

This year, I want to be a little more present here in the social spaces. Writing can be really isolating and I’m feeling the need for community.

My plan is to share what I’ve got going. Craft books I’ve really enjoyed. Progress on my WIPs. The journey that is editing my original work. Hopefully, you’ll all share too!

A knock at her door caught Rebecca by surprise. "Yes, come in." "Ms. James, any chance we could talk?"  Casey Gant stood in the doorway looking nervous. "Of course.  Come in.  What's on your mind?" "I have this friend…um…well, we used to be friends.  Maybe this isn't such a good idea."  Casey went to stand up, but Rebecca quickly held out her hand. "Casey, listen, anything you tell me is confidential. Unless I think you're going to hurt yourself or someone else.  You don't have to give me any names.  Let me help if I can."   She watched patiently, as Casey seemed to debate with himself, then nodded and settled back into the chair. "I'm pretty sure a friend of mine was drugged and...  Well, I think I might have figured out who drugged her." 

From my not fic writing (Original Contemporary Romance):

The coffee had gone cold an hour ago. Jack didn’t bother reheating it. He just sat on the edge of his kitchen table, laptop open, inbox refresh blinking at the top corner of the screen. No new messages. He checked again anyway. The condo was too quiet. Not peaceful—just empty. Like something had been carved out and never put back.

Winter had settled over the grounds of Malfoy Manor. The only color visible as far as Draco could see were shades of grey and the saturated tone of evergreens. Just below, his mother's rose garden sat quiet and dormant. The gentle, though still trembling, touch of his mother's hand on his shoulder followed her familiar magic. "You know, my dragon, some of the old families use stasis charms and weather wards to keep their gardens in bloom year-round. But that is not nature's way." She held her other hand out flat. A pink carnation bloomed in her palm and then wilted and faded. "Life cycles. We cannot have spring without winter."

The day was a blur. Logan had been supportive, staying by her side, trying to make her laugh. Even Wallace seemed to know something was wrong. But what was she supposed to do? She’d spent a lot of time hiding her feelings, plastering them away behind anger and sarcasm. Now that plaster was failing.

Was it Logan? Was it her decision to figure out what really happened to her, finally? And more, would she have been ready to ask the hard questions without one of her oldest friends there to support her?

She loved Wallace. He put the best in BFF. But he wasn’t Logan. There were things he didn’t know. Things she didn’t want him to know. Like Lianne and her drinking. Like how sometimes when she thought back on who she was before Lilly died, she didn’t always like that person.

Some truths hurt, Veronica.

She pulled the LeBaron into a spot along the backside of the large nondescript office building that housed the county’s free health clinic.

“You should relax more, Hermione.” He leaned his head down until his lips caressed her ear. 

“I could help you with that.” 

“Oh, I’m quite sure you could,” she said, and then hummed when he dug his thumbs into the base of her skull and rubbed small circles. 

Her head dropped forward, allowing him more access. Draco, continuing the small circles from her neck, back down to her shoulders, turned and placed soft kisses down the column of her neck. 

“Sure you’d prefer Theo’s company?” 

“You do have your benefits.” She laughed softly and then turned to face Draco. Her hand reached up and cupped his jaw. “You look so tired, Draco. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.” 

Shaking his head, he caressed the side of her face with his finger. “Protect me from what, love?” 

“From all of it. From…him.” 

Draco frowned. “No, it’s not your job to protect me.” 

“It is. I can feel you here.” She placed her other hand on her chest above her heart. “You’re hurting, and I can’t get to you.”

He wanted to scream, to run, but he couldn't. He couldn't do this. Bloody fucking hell! He was not one of them. Draco tried to move back into his garden, but the screaming was near constant and he couldn't seem to find his bearings. His breathing became erratic as the panic he'd been trying so hard to push down consumed him.
