nina wants to protest that this is utter folly, that she can hold her own against… well, against whatever may come. ( does she trust inej to be right on her heels? nina’s not certain — she’s not certain she knows any of them well enough yet to predict them ). then again, common sense would be to listen to the person with experience, the person who knows this place, who knows how things work.

at some times, common sense is more her strength than at others. in those other instances, stubbornness wins out. ❛ what about you? ❜ her words are soft, barely above a whisper for all their intensity, yet she demands an answer with a petulance that almost ( almost ) resembles a child’s willfulness. she is not, she has decided, leaving if there’s a chance she does so alone. ❛ you are coming, aren’t you?❜

it's a philosophical discussion he might be more inclined to embrace — and to argue the opposing side of — when all current evidence did not rest firmly in her favor. as it is, he might as well surrender the victory to her from the start and merely agree. ❛ not necessarily, ❜ he tries regardless, forcing a lightness to his tone that belies the trouble dumped in their lap by the inopportune timing of bad luck. ❛ some things are bad luck whenever they happen. ❜ a storm upon the sea, for instance, is never ideal. ❛ we just take notice when bad luck has perfect timing. ❜
