Pig

Last year i was looking through some old knitting patterns cut from magazines with a friend when we stumbled upon a very cute pig family pattern.

My boyfriend likes pigs, he wants a micro-pig and has received many pig related presents, so it instantly made sense that i would knit this pattern for him. September last year was the 2nd anniverary of us getting together so this seemed like an ideal present to give him. I Bought some very pig-like wool and when i went away on holiday with my family, i got down to it. I had never knitted anything like this before, my previous projects having been my blanket, and a simple hat, so the idea of creating something with such structure was quite daunting, but with a pattern to follow and my knitting bible at my side i got through it. I made one of the piglets as the size seemed right, and the whole pattern was surprisingly easy.

I finished the knitting and most of the sewing up in a week of lazy afternoons after hiking through the lake district mountains. But had no stuffing so i waited until i was home to complete the item. The only issues i remember having, were:

1. Creating a sufficiently curly tail, i must have made about 10, and i am still finding them at the bottom of my knitting bag to this day, i ended up using alot more stitchs than recommended in the pattern, and switching needles to maximise the difference in stich size between cast on and cast off (as it is this which made the curl).

2. Creating matching eyes, i suppose i was quite fussy about this because i really wanted to bring character to the pig's face, and by correctly postitioning the ears and eyes i hoped to achieve this. I am still not happy about the eyes but I think it was the best i could do.

I also was unsure about how much stuffing to use, looking now i think it is definatly understuffed and often needs some manhandling to create a more pig-like shape, but i did want him to be cuddly.

So anyway, the Boyfriend loved it, and it now sits proudly in his room:

I think this remains to this day the best piece of knitting which i have done and i am very proud of him.
