I think a lot about who I am to other people in the world–particular who I am to strangers as a mere concept in their lives.

Today this woman called our information desk and said, “my son’s band is playing tonight. I want to come see him, but he never answers his phone…..I want to be there. Have you heard anything about his band?”

And I felt so bad for this lady but I’m not in the music scene around here so I had to tell her no, sorry.

Five hours later, I’m hiking and run into a group of guys setting up for some outdoor performance, and as I watch them unload the drums it hits me.

“Hey,” I said, “are y’all in a band?”

They said yeah and smiled and I told them “one of your moms called today. She wants to watch you play, but she can’t get a hold of you. Call your mom.”

And they all pulled out their phones and started discussing whose mom it probably was as they presumably dialed their own.

And now, unless we meet again and recognize each other, that’s who I’ll be forever to those guys–some mysterious courier for mom-messages who came out of the woods and told them their mom called.

I didn’t even tell them why their mom called me. Who am I to their mom?? Nobody even asked. They just took my word for it and called their mothers.

Amazing.

I was five years old when Sesame Street first aired in 1969. I remember coming home from kindergarten and watching the show in the afternoon, and then, the next day, kids talking about what Oscar had said over snack time (he was the first character for children I saw that was allowed to be grouchy and not be “bad”).

Sesame Street celebrated a neighborhood that was multiracial and multicultural. When I was in preschool, that was my reality, too. Though I did and still do have a lot of cultural racism to unlearn, the extent to which I was able to learn how to be friends and neighbors with a diverse peer group was supported by Sesame Street. To be clear, this is why conservatives have wanted to destroy it from the beginning.

The Mississippi State Commission for Educational Television briefly banned Sesame Street in 1970 with the flimsy excuse that Mississippians weren’t ready to see racially integrated neighborhoods. And that happened in a few other Southern states, including one where the owner of a local NBC affiliate chose to air it, for free, no ad revenue, because he thought people were ready for it — or needed to get comfortable with it. And these state ETV commissions eventually relented after getting a lot of negative publicity.

» Writing After Reading Someone Better Than You

On the subject of artistic competition/jealousy/inadequacy, I read this earlier today and found it very helpful. (As a fanfic writer I get this feeling on the regular and it is NOT a fun experience let me tell you what.)

But usually the feeling is stranger than jealousy. More like witnessing athletic ability from inside a collapsing lawn chair. Admiration tangled with despair. You love the work. You hate the work. You want to mail the author flowers and also challenge them to mutual combat behind a CVS. Very normal artistic ecosystem. The dangerous moment comes afterward, when you return to your own draft too quickly. Big mistake. Rookie maneuver. Your pages are still wearing pajamas while the masterpiece you just finished walked past in a custom-tailored suit smelling faintly of genius and expensive soap. Comparison at that stage becomes chemically unsafe. Because drafts are ugly on purpose. People forget this constantly. The novel you just worshipped probably existed once as a horrifying document full of bad dialogue and placeholder names. But readers never see that version. We compare our wet cement to somebody else’s cathedral. Then panic arrives. Writers start shape-shifting after reading somebody brilliant. You can actually feel the influence trying to climb into your bloodstream. Suddenly you’re rearranging your syntax unconsciously. Using semicolons you haven’t emotionally earned. Writing sentences that sound like literary identity theft. I’ve done this. Everybody does. Influence panic usually fades after a few days. Your natural voice crawls back eventually like a raccoon returning to the porch after a thunderstorm. But there’s still value in the devastation. Real value. Great writing recalibrates your internal standards whether you enjoy the experience or not. Sometimes a masterpiece exposes laziness you’d hidden from yourself. Sometimes it reminds you language can still surprise people instead of merely functioning correctly like emotional Ikea furniture.
