Various Kinds of Locks
When looking at purchasing locks for your home or business one must take the time to search and look at the amount of options. There are several different security factors to consider before purchasing different locks, because chances are the locks you’re going to purchase are going to affect the security of your residential, commercial or automotive property.
This is never an easy decision, but the decision can be easier if you choose to make it easier by finding as much information as you possibly can on the different locks available on the market. So, don’t be afraid to ask questions or call your local locksmith to find more on what you need to do in order to be safe and secure inside of your residential or commercial property.
Every lock you research is created for one thing, and one thing only and that’s to make sure that no one is able to enter your property, but different locks are made for different doors. There are many types of locks, but the four most common are padlocks, deadbolts, knob-locks, and levers.
Padlocks:
Padlocks are the only kind of lock that is not permanently attached to anything else. Padlocks are in a range of sizes, and they are free standing and portable. These are the most easily recognizable types of locks. Padlocks are available in two different varieties: combination and keyed.
Combination padlocks are really popular on lockers in school, and it’s because they work in keeping lockers for example safe and secure, because a lot of times lockers and locks outside of your home don’t have a great lock to protect them but carrying a padlock combination key fixes that problem. The only problem with a padlock combination is that the chances of someone tricking the combination and opening the key actually increases.
Key padlocks require someone to actually have the right key before they open the locked door. So, having a key padlock makes it easier to ensure that nothing can break into your locker or anything else you own, without first having the right key.
Padlocks are perfect if there are no other locks around, and they are portable and easy to carry around.
Deadbolt Locks:
These locks are generally the most popular locks installed on external doors normally front doors in residential properties, because they make it almost impossible for someone to break-in, not only does someone have to have the right key, but they also can’t simply run into the door and break in, because of the power of the lock.
Deadbolts come in three different varieties: single, double, and lockable thumbturn, and each variety works perfectly, for keeping your property safe and secure, but are used for different purposes.
Single Cylinder Deadbolts are mostly found on American homes. The key cylinder is located on the exterior of the door, and inside of the door is where you have access to opening the door with or without a key. The one weakness with a single cylinder deadbolt is if a criminals finds another way inside the property then getting in and out of the door is actually pretty easy.
A double cylinder deadbolt uses a key cylinder on the inside and outside to ensure that the door is locked from both sides of the door. The down side of a double cylinder is that it then makes is that every time you use that door you have to have your key ready, that’s why the best use to this is in situations when it’s necessary to have both sides locked, and that’s why these aren’t as popular.
The final type of deadbolt lock is a combination of both the first cylinder and the second cylinder. These locks consist of a thumb turn on the inside that works like a normal single cylinder deadbolt, except the thumb turn can only be locked and unlocked with a key. Which means that the side with the thumb turn can be left unlocked by choice. There are not that many downsides to this key, because it uses the best of both worlds in keeping a residential or commercial property safe and secure.
Knob Locks:
These locks are used mostly in residential situations for interior doors, and are not common for exterior doors, because of the problems that can occur when trying to secure your door with these locks, unless you have a mixture of deadbolt and knob locks on the exterior.
Knob locks are mostly used on internal doors in residential situations, because of the convenience in using these locks on most doors. They are fairly easy to break into if you ever lock your self out, but they get their job done in the convenience of using these locks.
Lever Handle Locks:
Lever handle locks are most frequently used for inner doors in commercial settings. They are actually easier to open then knob locks, since they have a larger push down style handle rather than a knob that a person must grasp and turn.
That’s why they are perfect for commercial settings especially when you have people going through your interior doors throughout the day. Especially if a customer is handicap then this door is perfect.
Keyless Entry Pads:
Technology is improving in almost every industry, and you’d be surprised by how much in the lock industry that keyless entry pads are moving forward. These locks make life easier by not requiring you to own and keep track of a bunch of keys that might be stolen. Keyless entry can be installed on every kind of door from safes, to exterior, interior, and even your vehicle.
You are also in control of the system and can choose from the several different keyless entry systems that you want from biometric (fingerprints), pin codes, and there are even apps that you can download that allow you to be in control. Keyless entry pads are essentially deadbolts that use an electronic keypad that you control instead of keys.
