Me and Dannica spent yesterday at Ernest Day in Montgomery Bell State Park for the second year. Ernest Goes to Camp was filmed here at "Group Camp 1" in the 1980s and was released in 1987. We met the creator/director of the Ernest character John Cherry III & the actor who played Counselor Stennis (Eddy Schumacher), went canoeing, tried archery, explored filming locations and I picked up a book about Ernest himself written and signed by his nephew. I'm blessed to be able to share things from my childhood with my children. . . #knowwhutimean #vern #ripernest #movielocation #ernestgoestocamp #kampkikakee (at Montgomery Bell State Park)
Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), dir. John Cherry, PG, **, 11/29/14
It's not a classic. It's not even particularly memorable. I saw it a few times as a kid and enjoyed it, but I never felt the pull to watch it again as an adult. For whatever reason, I started it on impulse while scrolling through Netflix last night. I'd already watched Airplane!, and I wasn't looking to start another movie. I thought maybe I'd watch a few scenes before bed. But when my wife finished what she was working on, she sat down beside me on the couch, and we both watched it through to the end. Kind of nostalgic for both of us, I suppose. I was surprised to learn she'd watched it a bunch as a kid and had the whole film practically memorized! But I enjoyed the viewing, too--mostly because of Varney's performance. He's so into it, and I love the different characters he brings out (see clip below). Also, the whole endeavor, while not particularly well-acted, written, or directed, feels earnest (pun completely intended). It's a silly movie, as all of the Ernest movies are, but it walks that line between ridiculous and endearing quite well. Ernest was never a critically lauded character (quite the opposite, actually), but he was often a fan favorite. And while much of this film feels like a TV movie (see above comment about acting, writing, and directing), Varney shines. If you're a child of the 80's or 90's and haven't seen Ernest for a while, give this a watch (especially as we move into the holiday season). Try to tell me it doesn't make you giggle at least a few times.
