Snippet from one of them (should be easy to guess)
20 minutes later, two hedgehogs came through the entrance to the workshop, arguing.
"Hey guys!" Tails greeted cheerfully, causing them to pause mid-conversation.
"Wait, why are you here?" Sonic asked Shadow.
"I could ask you the same thing, faker," Shadow sneered in response.
"I'm here because Tails asked me to test the modifications he made to my extreme gear," Sonic stated.
"Really? Because Tails told me he had a new prototype to test…"
The two turned towards Tails, who had a smug look on his face. Shadow’s heart skipped a beat in fear.
"Okay, what's this about?" Sonic questioned.
I feel like Shadow being germaphobic, or liking to clean alot of stuff and beingg in a relationship with scourge clashes with eachother. Since I like making scourge suffer, he doesnt feel deserving of that relationship, resulting in him being self destructive and a bitch. Trying to get Shadow to clean that one stain in his life (scourge)
And shadow’s like “you dont need to destroy yourself anymore.”
But with knuckles, he only sees scourge when he’s injured, on the brink of death, since scourge only goes over to angel island when he needs the master emerald for the chaos energy to heal. And he doesnt tell Knuckles what happens everytime, he’s too closed off. But to knuckles, scourge is an annoying extension to the master emerald, since he has mutated with it.
So naturally, he deadpans “I will protect you.”

Besides, Sonic wasn't really someone who enjoyed sitting around, staring at the sky. If he had come with, he probably would have complained of boredom until either Scourge raced him or Knuckles sparred with him, which would defeat the purpose of the outing.
In other words, Knuckles was quite happy to be alone with Scourge.
