What's on Reddit?
Looking at the Tech section of Reddit (4/9/13) an article about Google’s fiber-optic network, Google Fiber, was posted at the top. It cost Google less than 100 million dollars to connect 2 cities, one in Missouri (52 million) and another in Kansas (42 million). The amounts spent by Google and discussed regarding their future spending for faster and clearer Internet connections in the U.S. are astronomical. What are people doing on the Internet, besides gaming, that needs such powerful networking resources? See Reddit’s technology page for other stories of interest.
Moving Toward Paperless Society
In this recent New York Times article, online pay-walls for newspapers are discussed. More papers are losing their print editions and are unable to survive with advertising alone. If the trend of newspapers using pay-walls continues does this mean i-reporters will lose their hold on the news-seeking public? Will authoritative journalism return to the news? Will there be jobs for new journalists? It is probably too early to tell, but web 3.0 may have more to do with returning to a capitalist model of information than having computers deciding what the public wants.
