Maia and Jordan’s first meeting (part III)

Jordan, after conversing with her, tells her she knows a lot about the ocean for someone that doesn’t get in. She jokes sometimes she puts her feet in the water, maybe an ankle if she feels adventurous, but that she prefers to sit and watch the waves to keep her mind off the bad things that happen on dry land. He says he gets it and introduces himself; she does the same as they shake hands, laughing. He proclaims it’s his duty to get her to surf jsut one time; Maia replies it’s never goign to happen, shaking her head when he asks if she’s sure. He smiles and tells her to suit herself, walking to the shore, and she smiles looking at him, putting her book up again.]

In which Maia is me.

He’s asked why she won’t go in the water, and a bit awkward, she reveals she’s terrified of the ocean. He says there’s no need to be and shark attacks are a lot rarer than one thinks. Maia replies it’s not just sharks, but everything; she can swim in a pool all day long but you don’t know what’s out there: fish, stingrays, giant mutant octopuses that swallow... He interrupts her, saying if she means octopi, and she corrects him saying it’s octopuses, telling him to look it up and making Jordan smile.]
