While not the best board game out there by a long shot (I’m looking at you Time Stories with hearts in my eyes), I do think Kodama: The Tree Spirits is one of the more beautifully designed games, components-wise. Clearly inspired by the film Princess Mononoke, the game is still delightful and fresh. The style used makes the tree spirits more friendly and approachable than the film’s depiction. The trees are not overly designed, with few separate leaves being drawn on clumps of greenery. This makes it so the unique additions to the branches (what really drives the game) stand out and are easy to distinguish for the players.
