a friend sent us a link to a recording of a hungarian children's choir and it flashed us back to 1986, when we were 23 and decided to change our legal name for the first time (for some reason, it never occurred to us to change our firstname even though we didn't like it, until we got ordained as a buddhist in 1997 and got given a sanskrit name that we adopted as our only firstname - we never actually chose our own firstname until 2019)

anyway back in 1986 we changed our name to [deadname] Ének Arkvaissa Spoonbill (we liked that the initials spelled "geas")

Ének is hungarian for "song", or "birdsong" in an archaic poetic sense (which is why we chose it), and we chose it also because we'd fallen in love with hungarian after being given a cassette of a 70s hungarian folk group called Kolinda (means "carol" in the sense of a song) that changed our life

Arkvaissa is a word in the dragons' tongue in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea series, spoken by Ged the archmage to a dragon who was looking for him: nam hieth arw Ged arkvaissa "if thou seekest Ged, here find him"

we just loved the word, but we never told Ursula that we took this as a name, back when we were writing to each other, because we were embarrassed to be such a fanbeing - but now our firstname is from another character in the same book series, and we honour her memory that way too

my favourite Hungarian folk song (starts around 8:30 in the below recording) - it's an end-of-love song, about János and Anni, like stars, like flowers - they wake up in the morning and she says to him (loose translation) "take back the ring that you gave me - the diamond has gone cloudy" which is such a heavy burn and anyway the harmonies are amazing

I first heard this on someone's old cassette they gave to me at college and it took another 20 years before I got to find out what the song was about (had to wait for the internet yes I'm that old)
