I watched bitterly as the couple on television held each other’s hands tight, their eyes meeting and they both refused to look away. It was something most people dreamed of when picturing a relationship. So loving and close, admiring one another despite their faults, wanting to be together every second of the day. I craved that feeling. Instead, I found myself begging for affection from someone I thought was almost incapable of giving it.
Junhoe is an amazing boyfriend, he just doesn’t know how to play the role well. I always assumed his awkwardness would fade the longer we were together but, after nearly a year, I found myself stuck in square one. The lack of PDA never bothered me but, even in private, he’d only give so little endearment. Our relationship was mostly based on our snarky personalities, keeping our lives playful and funny, but besides that, what else was there?
I snapped out of my daydream once I realized he was staring, biting my lower lip to hold my smirk. Maybe he finally got inspiration form this show to do something romantic.
“Why are you staring at me?” I asked coyly, predicting his response in my mind.
“Your head got larger.”
I bit the inside of my cheek, grabbing a pillow from the end of my couch before straddling him, hitting him with the soft material repeatedly.
“Why are you doing this? You know I love your gigantic head. It keeps the sun from getting into my eyes.” He joked as I hit him one last time, groaning as I stood, my hand pushing my hair back.
“Junhoe, in less than a month, it’ll be a year since we began dating. Why do you still act so… Uninterested?”
“I am interested! We had sex just last ni-“
“Not that! I meant romantically! Do you even remember when our last date was?” I asked seriously, watching as his eyes looked anywhere but me trying to find some answers.
“About last week.”
“March 17th!” I just rolled my eyes and turned from him, walking back to my bedroom and falling face first onto my bed.
I wasn’t crying or even sad, just trying to accept the fact Junhoe wasn’t a fully romantic guy. I was already content with him, so why would I make myself upset by asking for more than he’s already given me?
The sound of footsteps alarmed me but I didn’t budge. I allowed a pair of arms to wrap tightly around my waist and pull me up, a yelp leaving me as I found myself thrown over Junhoe’s shoulder. He began marching out of the bedroom and down the hall, grabbing my purse and phone before placing me on my feet at the front door. I watched as he got on the floor, grabbing my shoes and helping me slip them on, my face heating up slightly.
“What are you doing, Junhoe?”
“We’re going out.”
“We don’t have t-Ah! Stop doing this!” I screamed as he lifted me again, tossing me over his shoulder once more. He placed my phone into my purse and placed it onto his shoulder before leaving my apartment.
“Which one do you want?”
“The duck! The large duck!” I stared excitedly at the plushie dangling from the man’s booth.
I clutched the first stuffed animal Junhoe won me, a medium sized brown bunny with a yellow bow. I thanked the worker as I grabbed the duck, staring at it happily as I realized how bright it was. I already had stuffed animals at home but I needed more and these would fit right in. My body unconsciously shifted uncomfortably as I felt eyes staring at me. I peeked over to my side to see Junhoe’s eyes examining me before meeting my own.
“What?” I asked cluelessly. He smirked and reached to grab the large animal in my arms, using his free hand to grab mine.
“You’re just cute.”
I stared blankly at him as he pulled us along. Junhoe was so straightforward with his feelings that they were hard to read at times, it confused me. But tonight, seeing how we’ve gone from my favorite restaurant to a fair that was only in town for the week, him not making sassy remarks or jokes but instead speaking his mind with complete sincerity, even holding my hand without shrinking away was a clear sign my outburst struck something in him and, no matter how he would’ve gone about it, he was trying. For me.
I watched as a lanky male opened the door of a car, my eyes scanning the device before realizing where we were. I let out a gasp as Junhoe guided me forward, helping me into the seat before climbing inside. The door slammed shut and we were suddenly lifted, my eyes on him as he took a deep breath.
“Junhoe, I know you’re trying to be more romantic but we don’t have to do this.”
“You always said you wanted to ride one.” His voice was a bit loud as the car jolted to a stop.
I smiled and moved closer to him, letting my head fall onto his shoulder as I laced our fingers together, his hand immediately squeezing mine. The ride continued to move upwards, ever few stops making his body jump anxiously. I looked over to see his eyes wide open and slowly sat up to grasp his cheeks with my hand, leaving the stuffed bunny on my lap.
“Look at me. Everything you’ve done tonight has been enough for me. I’m sorry I said you weren’t romantic but I love regular you. I love your sarcasm and playfulness and I love how loud you are because it always makes me feel better and, when the time is right and you’re comfortable, you’re always the sweetest man in the world to me. You didn’t have to do this-“
“We’re so far up, I think I might pass out.” He breathed out, eyes flickering around to see we were now at the very top, the view amazing but suddenly cut off by Junhoe laying his head against mine.
“I think I’m gonna throw up.” I rolled my eyes and smiled, grabbing his hand again to bring them to my lips.
