I've heard Korea has these public bath houses. Do you have any first hand experiences? What are they like?
Yeah, they do! As long as you are comfortable being naked around other people of the same sex, it is great. You can wear a bathing suit, but you will be the odd one out.
Each place seems to vary a bit, but for the most part here is what you can expect. They have different rooms and pools of varying temperatures that you can bathe in. There are saunas, food, massages, and just plain showers.
When you go to the bath house, you put all of your clothes in a locker and head to the pool room. Rinse off before you get into the pool! Like I said, there are different temps for the pools, so just choose the one that is just right for you. AFTER you have soaked in the pools for a while, you are supposed to hop into the cold pool. I am a wimp and only got up to my thigh before I jumped out and screamed. After that, you just take a regular shower.
I have been to two types of bath houses. The first was just a plain bath house that had different pools and showers (like the ones you see in anime and the one I just described). The second was a jjimjilbang, where I was able to sleep, bathe, eat, and sauna for only 15,000 won. The latter is a great substitute for a hotel as long as you can sleep with a big group of people on the floor.
If you want to see a fun video about it, watch “Conan goes to a Korean bath house.” It is pretty great.
