Sebastian shook his head. “I’m fine, boss.” But his voice cracked and his breaths were ragged and short. His face was pale and he felt freezing, but he was actually burning up. He clearly was not fine.

Normally, Sebastian could navigate storm waters fairly well. But this was what the humans had called a hurricane and it was much worse than he was used to swimming through. He didn’t know how close to shore he was until his side was slammed into one of the larger rocks at the cliff base. He curled up in pain, unable to swim as he couldn’t breathe easily. Then everything was black as his head collided with another rock.
When he woke, the first thing he knew was pain. And then it was stiffness in his fins and body and the dry air around him. Terror gripped him as he realized he was stranded in a small pool on the shore. But he was overcome by pain as he waited for the tide to come back in.

Sebastian perked up in his cage at the voice. He could smell the other person, but couldn’t figure out why he liked the smell. No one that worked there smelled like this and he sat up, eyes locking on the body across the room. “Who?” he asked roughly. Much of his vocabulary had been stripped away during the testing, but he still knew enough of the basics.

Sebastian smiled at him. “I can do that, Jim. Want a mix or something straight? I can make you something and we’ll curl up on the couch and maybe turn on a movie.”
