24. Happy holidays to all the trolls and all kinds of creatures !
So. Uh. Full disclaimer, I'm an exchange student from another country and I So Did Not Know what I was getting myself into when I came to Elsewhere University.
Anyway. I have a slight problem. It seems that I may have brought a kotitonttu, a house elf of sorts, over to EU with me? I didn't even know they were real! Let alone that there'd be one that.... I don't know if it followed me here, or if it somehow was here already and just got attached to me or I just happened to end up in a dorm where one already lived, or if maybe it came into being due to my presence here. I don't know. Everyone I've talked to claims that they'd never heard of there being one before I started noticing it, though.
Anyway, I wouldn't mind it, I in fact get along reasonably well with Hanne the kotitonttu (I'm not the tidiest person in the world but I can keep common areas and kitchen clean for my part, I can even keep my own bed and that area reasonably clean when there's pressure to do so), but not everyone else does and she seems to have claimed this entire dorm building as her household to watch over. And like is typical for her sort, she gets really really irritated about people making a mess and disrespecting her. She's threatened to light the entire building on fire a couple of times due to a few people annoying her, but I don't think she will because there's me and a couple others she seems to like. On the other hand, she might just give us enough warning to get our stuff out and then do it anyway...
So just as a heads-up to everyone, if you live in that dorm, keep the common areas at the very least clean! Keep the kitchens clean! Don't go take a shower at 11pm on Friday nights, she's claimed that as her turn to shower and she'd like to have her privacy. If you cook something (and I mean actually cook; instant ramen or microwave pizza don't count), it's polite to leave her a bit, though you don't have to. If you do, just leave it on a plate on the kitchen counter and leave a paper with it that says "Hannelle". Even if you don't, though, just really, really make sure you clean up whatever mess you've made in the kitchen afterwards, there's nothing she hates like a messy kitchen. You'll probably never see her, but if you do, be respectful. Thank her for looking after the dorm. If she's helped you personally, thank her for that.
If you're respectful to her, she can be quite nice and helpful! The dorm building overall is in unbelievably good shape for its age and compared to many others around, and that might be her influence, but even beyond that, I've noticed that anything I lose or misplace within the building tends to find its way back to me, appearing at the foot of my bed or on the desk usually within the same day when I complain about how I can't find it and most have put it down somewhere stupid. She's even occasionally returned items I've misplaced elsewhere in the campus area. It's very nice of her, I think. I've also noticed that the Fair Folk don't seem to be bothering me as much as they did before I really took notice of the fact that there was a kotitonttu here and made a point of being nice and respectful towards her. Even though she's only one, and the Fair Folk are many, and she for now considers herself the guardian of that specific dorm only, I get the sense that they don't want to do anything too much to one who's clearly under Hanne's protection for the time being. Don't count that protection to get you out of any trouble you got into yourself, though, and still don't wander alone in places or at times when doing that would make you a target; the protection doesn't extend that far.
My last, but most important point is; if she ever warns you of anything, take her seriously. If you wake up in the middle of the night to her shaking you awake or talking to you, or if she grabs you by the wrist and drags you somewhere, or if she ever stops you from entering a building: Take. That. Seriously. I cannot stress that enough. A kotitonttu doesn't often show themself to anyone, not necessarily even people of the household, and if they do that, it's usually for a good reason. If Hanne warns you of danger, the danger is very real, and if you don't listen to her, don't come crying to me about getting killed! You were warned. If you live in her "household", and don't go out of your way to be messy or spite her or otherwise lose her favor, she'll take care of the building to an extent, and she'll protect you to an extent. Be grateful of that, show the proper respect, but otherwise just go about your own daily life and don't worry about it too much unless she gives you a reason to be worried!
