Chapter 7 ::: Split the Sky
A choice has been made and set in motion, and though Dirk is hesitant he knows in his heart he has to follow it through. But which Spirit is waiting to be the one to claim him? And will the gift he is given be worth going against all he was taught and paying the ultimate price?

Omg I just realized that KotS!Jakes hands would actually be super sensitive, since he has had them covered for so long. So holding hands, or really doing anything bare handed, would be a whole mess of new sensation. It's 4AM and this is all I can think about.
YES. Jake has a LOT of touch issues and is essentially touch starved? For him holding hands with Dirk was a HUGE experience with a lot of new feelings, which is why he was so caught up on it. In the initial rush of their first meeting he subdued it but those thoughts lingered and bothered him and that built up into what happened in chapter six.
His hands are very sensitive without gloves and he enjoys that as much as it bothers him. It’ll be explored more as we go, but I’m glad it occurred to someone already.
King of the Sun 06 Preview
Because of delays writing (read: it got out of hands) I thought I’d post a preview of the next chapter, too! This is the start of the chapter, up to a relevant point, so clearly, spoilers for King of the Sun.
Dirk’s skin felt warm as Karkat’s cinders faded from around him and he caught the wall, panting and swigging down the water in the glass he’d been handed before the spirit sent him on his way to Jake’s room with a snap and a flare of brimstone. This time his knees hadn’t buckled entirely at least, and he considered that a success, even if Karkat’s words had left him doubting the discomfort would ever fade.
At least not until-
This time he chased the thoughts, but they slipped away, though he was too exhausted to dwell on it. Maybe when he dreamed, if it was more than a delusion, maybe he’d see red again and have a chance to catch it.
Karkat had stared at him with a troubled expression when he filled the space after the spirit’s apology for leaving with the question he needed answered, if it could’ve been real, if it was real. John’s never managed, Karkat reminded him, and trust me, he’s fucking tried more than you can imagine.
Maybe John couldn’t find him because he’d been occupied.
Karkat’s frown had been deep, but he’d nodded despite it. Maybe.
Dirk set the glass down on the table and sighed heavily, rubbing a hand up over his face and going to push his hair back before his fingers hit metal and he stopped, running his fingertips over the Crown and letting his eyes unfocus. Jake had left once everything was cleared, left him to the dance and the food, to the wide berth some people gave him or the excited chatter and thanks others brought. It had been clear the room was divided on what to think of his actions; not in that they were necessary, no, he had heard nothing but approval of his willingness to throw himself into danger for Jake- but the very fact he had been so quick to take off a man’s head, to break the neck of another… There was something to fear in a man who would kill without hesitation, no matter the cause.
Yet still, not everyone feared him.
“...Karkat said you were close.”
“We- were.”
Day Two - AUs - King of the Sun
I haven’t got to write as much of John and Dave’s story in King of the Sun as I’d like yet, but I’m very excited to hit stride with it and show you all where it’s going. The two Kings who would’ve united Skaia if it hadn’t been for the Empress have a lot more in store before I’m through with them.

And the White Knight takes the Black Pawn; Whatever will you do now?
Dirk for the Gala scene in King of the Sun! Another collab with sketch provided by the lovely @dacadaca
“There’s hope for you yet, boy.” [x]
Another KotS collab with @dacadaca featuring the Unspoken Ship ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(followup, sorry) So Courtiers are created anew with each generation, and there's no sense of a family being inherently noble?
In Prospit, yes! The Monarch personally chooses Courtiers and their houses and wealth are tied to the title. A Courtier can be anyone, and similarly the children of Courtiers are in no way entitled to the same rank. Often they do end up made part of the Court purely because the Monarch gets to know them while they’re being raised, but not always, and they can turn down the role. More regularly, Knighthoods (the easiest way into the Court) are given for acts the Monarch finds particularly worthwhile or appealing. It isn’t unusual for the most outstanding servants to end up with a title and servants of their own; nor is it unheard of for one of the poorest in Prospit to do something heroic and end up with a manor they never dreamed of.
