They’re going to bring back Jinu in the sequel but it’ll be the Moonlight Knight.
For those unfamiliar with Sailor Moon, in the back half of the Negaverse arc, Darien, who up until that point had been Serena’s mutually-tsundere love interest while secretly playing the role of Tuxedo Mask, the Sailor Scouts’ support hero, is kidnapped and brainwashed by Queen Beryl, who makes him one of her generals and the Scouts’ greatest enemy. Meanwhile, a mysterious new figure begins appearing at the same moments Tuxedo Mask would have during fights and offering the same sort of support—the Moonlight Knight, who, rather than wearing a black tuxedo and basically a domino mask, is wearing a white Arabic-styled desert robe and full face-concealing mask. Also I think he had a scimitar?
Since the Scouts are now aware that Darien was Tuxedo Mask and he’s been brainwashed to be evil and is working against them, this introduces a new mystery to the story—who is the Moonlight Knight? The answer is the Moonlight Knight is the astrally-projected good elements of Darien’s soul, manifesting to protect Serena from his evil brainwashed body.
So. KPDH2, HUNTR/X is being menaced by Sexy Evil Jinu (actually Jinu’s body, claimed by Gwi-Ma at the end of KPDH) and a new band of lackeys while being supported by a mysterious guardian spirit (actually Jinu’s soul, gifted to Rumi at the end of KPHD).
This lets them build an entire second movie around the tension of Rumi and Jinu not being able to be together, again, while teasing a new love interest that ultimately turns out not to threaten the property’s core ship.
Why am I calling him Darien and not Mamoru, and her Serena and not Usagi? Why am I calling it the Negaverse arc and not the Dark Kingdom arc? Because that’s my point.
