the magic of Shotaro Hidari is that he’s so unbelievably corny that he wraps back around to being cool. he’s sort of the anti-Columbo? Columbo’s whole thing is that he doesn’t really give a shit about his appearance except to the extent that it can throw his suspects off guard. all he really cares about is the job. Shotaro cares SO deeply about his (very tacky) image to the point where it’s pathetic, which ends up having the same effect of catching people off guard with his genuinely good detective work. and even tho his sense of style is ridiculous, he ends up pulling it off via his earnestness and confidence. spectacular writing, direction, acting and costuming working in harmony
