Week 7: Residential Landscape

The residential landscape I would like to own someday would have a large area that would be able to have a lot of company over and heavily wooded so it seems like it is secluded from everything else. I would like to live by a river also. The first picture shows a pretty good example of what I mean by a large area to have company over. I like how there is a hot tub and a pretty big area for people to hang out at. The next picture shows how I would want the rest of my landscape to be like. I like it because it seems very peaceful and a nice place to relax.

Week 7: Residential Landscape

My residential site is Urban Springs, California by BIONIC. The project is on a typical 25’ by 100’ lot and the yard is about 25’ by 50’ lot with a 12’ grade change. The base flow of the spring equate to about 100 gallons of water per day. They renovated the yard at the same time as the old house on the property. For this project, the owners wanted to bring the springs out of the underground pipes and sewers. The project took 8 years to complete.

The yard mainly consists of decks and vegetation. The spring runs through the yard with rain chains, screens and runnels. The water runs off the lower runnel into a steel frame filled with black Mexican pebble. The pebbles and frame allow the water to dissipate back into the ground. Throughout the various vegetation, there are also large wooden screens with different heights and opacity. The screens serve as privacy as well as borrow views from the adjacent properties.

I enjoy this site because the backyard makes you feel like you are somewhere other than a backyard.

Week 7 - Residential Landscape

Naturally, I find myself drawn to residential landscape design, so I really enjoyed searching for a site this week. I didn’t have to search long before I found a site that I fell in love with. The site I found was the New Century Garden in Palm Springs, CA. This garden was designed by Steve Martino and Associates and won the ASLA Residential Design Award in 2012. 

The client wanted an elaborate environment where he could host a wide range of gatherings, from small parties to large fundraising events. The garden is made up of mostly desert vegetation to match the traditional character and rugged landscape of Palm Springs. This is actually my favorite thing about this site and the reason why it caught my attention. The site designer added many oddly and dramatically shaped cacti, palm trees, and other desert vegetation to the garden. I find the dramatic shapes to be very visually appealing and unique, especially in contrast to the smoothness of the water features. My parents are huge fans of cacti, and their love for them has been passed onto me as well. Along with the desert vegetation, the designer incorporated things like a reflecting pool. I thought this was an interesting move because it adds an elegant touch to the desert landscape. The site also includes a pool and multiple water features, a large function lawn, a fire pit area, and a tennis court.
