When I first discovered this album in 1978, the reviewer who turned me on to it declared that it was the best rock album ever recorded and labeled Tonio K the rock and roll version of George Metesky. This obscure cultural reference could well have come from Tonio K’s own wonderful absurdist lyrics. I have acquired this recording in almost every form known to man – LP, cassette, CD and mp3. If it had been released as an 8-track tape I would have bought that. Look up George Metesky, buy this CD, crank up the volume and experience funny, intelligent, raucous rock and roll at its absolute best.

Approximately three decades ago, I purchased “Life in the Foodchain” as an LP and listened to it on my left-over-from-college stereo. It was an amazing album that seemed to capture all of the angst of the late 1970’s and throw it back in my face with vicious existential gusto. It was, in a nutshell, one of the most innovative and angrily-musical albums I had ever heard.

Recently, I was trying to explain to some genius-level twenty-something software engineers how far ahead of his time Steve Krikorian (Tonio K.) was…and how appropriate his music still is for the angst of our current time. They didn’t “get it”, so I ordered “Life in the Foodchain” in CD format and ripped them a few sample tracks. They definitely “got it!”

Having proved my point, I took the CD home and spun it up on my audiophile-grade system. Suffice it to say that I heard nuances of voice and instruments that were shrouded by the limitations of the LP and MP3 formats. Bottom line, this is STILL one of the most innovative and angrily-musical albums I have ever heard.

  “Life in the Foodchain” deserves a place of honor on almost any eclectic’s Top 100 of All Time list. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and click ADD TO CART. The sound and fury of a rare and innovative genius await you. Enjoy!
