Prodigal Daughter pt. 1

Kemus leaned against the wall, his arms folded across his chest, as Nao discussed their terms with the Sith. They’d take the job, since they made it a habit to not turn down a Sith to their face, but it never hurt to get everything agreed upon up front.

“So we’re just looking this Jedi?” Nao asked, pointing to the figure the Sith was showing them on the holo. “Shouldn’t be too hard.”

“When you find her, you will give her this,” the Sith said, handing Nao a holo-recording. “You will not watch this yourself and you will discuss this with no one.”

Nao nodded and pocketed the holo-recording. “Absolutely. Discretion comes with the price. And speaking of...”

The Sith waved her hand. “You’ll be paid. Now go.”

With their dismissal made clear, Nao nodded her head and Kemus pushed himself off the wall. They left the small office and he draped his arm around Nao’s shoulder.

“So, what do you think?” he asked.

“It’s easy money,” she replied. “And it shouldn’t take too long. As soon as we get back to the ship, I’ll call some of my contacts and see what we can dig up about our Jedi.”

Krynna laughed bitterly as the specks of blood dried on her lips.

“I’m proud of you,” she said. Svistun watched as her eyes, already unfocused, returned to their natural amber color.

Svistun looked down at his dying mother, his face hard. In all his years, she had never once said she was proud of any of her children, let alone him.

“You’re more of a Sith than I ever gave you credit for,” she told him, coughing up more blood. He wasn’t sure how to respond. For once, he was glad he could touch the Force and didn’t have to feel her death that way.

Legacy

Despite the pain of the contractions, Krynna was determined to bear her suffering quietly. She never asked to be pregnant, never asked for this strange life to be demanding release from her after the months and months of growing inside of her.

Yet here she was, on Nar Shaddaa, giving birth to a child she was not prepared for. She had never even told Marve that she was pregnant. If she had her way, he would never find out. She was too full of rage and hatred towards him for putting her into this condition, making her weak.

Though she couldn't completely blame him. She still had no idea why she decided to continue the pregnancy in the first place. Some part of her wanted to have a connection to another being, another life that was intertwined with her own. But she was only an apprentice and she knew that it would never work out that way. Her Master would never have allowed this had she have known and. Maybe if she had waited until she was more powerful, in a higher position of authority, it would have worked out differently.

As it was, she would probably never see the child after today. She was fortunate enough to find a doctor that would help her with the birth. He wasn't gentle by any means, but he would help her through the labor. Her child would, more than likely, end up living on the streets, but it was better than being dead.

“I think the baby is about ready to come out,” the doctor told her as another contraction hit. “Just a few pushes now.”

Krynna did as she was told, still doing her best to remain quiet, using the pain to help her focus on the task at hand.

A cry pierced the air. Her daughter's cry, Krynna realized. She breathed a sigh of relief as exhaustion washed over her. She had never imagined childbirth would be such work.

“Good job,” the doctor told her. He had been cleaning the infant up and now placed her into Krynna's arms. A million thoughts ran through her head as she looked at her daughter and a strange silence fell over the room.

“What now?” Krynna asked. “I already told you, I cannot take her with me. And no one in their right mind would take her in.”

“Maybe not in the Empire,” the doctor said.

“You're lucky I have no more energy, or I'd blast you where you stand for that line of thought,” Krynna said. What the man was suggesting was ludicrous.

Or was it? She remembered what she had learned from the Revanites on Dromund Kaas: Revan had started as a Jedi, so why not her child? She would find her some day, teach her to walk both sides of the Force, as Revan had done and as she was trying to do.

“What would it take?” Krynna asked. “She must be trained.”

“I may have someone that can help,” the doctor said. With a heavy heart, Krynna handed the infant to the doctor. It had been a difficult decision, but now that it was done, she felt a weight lifted from her. Yes, she'd see her again, she knew it. The Force would provide.

“Kairyl,” she said.

“What’s that?” the doctor asked.

“Her name.” Krynna replied. “Her name is Kairyl.”
