To Kunal Karan Kapoor, on his birthday...
I may not know Kunal Karan Kapoor as well as I know Mohan Bhatnagar, but it is difficult to stay ignorant of him once you see the display of his talent.
It started for me with the arrival of Mohan Bhatnagar at the Khajrana temple. I’ve never seen any hero onscreen behave like him: the casual, yet confident gait, the ever-messy hair, and the slight downward quirk of his lips when he’s amused... everything just added to the charm.
Even my late Grandma, who didn’t understand a word of Hindi, loved his mannerisms and used to pester me to translate the dialogues - which I used to do quite happily. It was great to watch him making fun of Guru and Renu, sharing comradeship with Nanhi, laughing aloud or enjoying a chocobar like a child, without any inhibition and then, making an effort to hide the pangs of love for Megha behind the laughter and jokes.
The way his eyes light up with wonder and the way they droop embarrassed is a treat to watch. The exasperated eye-rolls, mischievous winks, the adorable puppy-dog eyes asking forgiveness and the piercing and passionate stare….
Not many actors are blessed with the skill to speak with eyes - eyes that can deliver an intense dialogue or a light-hearted one equally, effortlessly - without uttering a single word out of their mouth.
And when he does speak, it is an added bonus : the perfect voice modulation further cements the character into the hearts of the viewers. In spite of being a non-Hindi speaker, “arre yaar”, “sunna” and “haanaa” have infiltrated my vocabulary.
One day as I was searching the internet idly, I finally recognized him as the Angad of Pratigya. I couldn’t believe my eyes! How did I not recognize before! I double, triple-checked the name of the actor. This revelation made me look up all the characters he has played so far; and that discovery left me dumbstruck.
And it was then I realized the intricacies of the magic he weaves in front of our eyes - his ability to transform into any character. As Angad, he created utter revulsion, as Yudi, he captured adoration and as Mohan, he bowled me over completely. He is a rarity - an actor who managed to bag the lead role and pulled it off excellently, after being a well-hated villain. If it were in the films, I’m sure his name would’ve gone down in history. Still, his name has got engraved in the hearts of thousands of fortunate viewers and will stay there forever.
Whenever he does emotional scenes, my mind keeps fluctuating between two things: "OMG his performance is outstanding! Just keep going!" and then, "No, I can't see you suffer..." He startled me when he exploded in anger, made me yearn to go for his help and comfort him when he became desperate and helplessness and when remorse engulfed him. The scenes in which he smile through tears created goose bumps and burned my throat with a sort of elation – it was an otherworldly feeling.
This is his magic... He simply lives the character. and strike our emotional chords perfectly, emitting deep empathy. And we become puppets - crying when he cries, laughing when he laughs...
His off-screen personality too, have influenced me greatly. Seeing his passion for photography, I too began giving time to my hobbies. And when each new picture comes, it just opens new windows to the world for me...The hardwork and dedication he puts into the roles urge me to do the same in my life...The down to earth, humble nature and the care he shows to others reassures my belief in goodness....
Leaving toes in surf’s mischief, Losing sight in forest’s beauty, Trapping breeze in tousled hair You blink those camera eyes... Even in the most unlikely place, Beauty is discovered... And in the darkest places, Lamps of hope are lit...
Words fall short whenever I try to express my gratitude. When the life outside was dreary, the world he created had been a heaven for me and I can assure, for thousands of other people.
I never imagined I would be brave enough to wander into the social media network one day and share my opinions with people I have never met. But that too happened because of this urge to show my support and gratitude in some way. And I am glad.
So, here I am, using the newfound social media skills to wish him a very happy birthday....
It’s time to shake off all the blue
And write another chapter of life, brand new!
May joy and peace be in queue
May all your wishes come true
Designs in life’s fabric, may it sew
In bright colours for you to view...
And bring success in all that you brew...
Wishing a very happy birthday to you....
May there be happiness
And more reasons to smile...
And when it is not so at times,
Remember the lives
That flourish in that smile,
The wishes and prayers...
Lean on them for a while...
May the innocence in those eyes
Remain unaltered by time...
May joy reach you
When you feel sad
And may light find you
In all the dark corners...
The last time when NBT happened, I was ignorant of the powers of social media and shared the opinions, fun and thrill with just my best friend. But this time with DAK, I’m going to be a part of this journey from the beginning itself with so many like-minded people out here.
After all, the wait is over now: his contact with us, the audience, is re-established through Shaurya Urmi Sinha - another role in which we can hardly imagine anyone else now...That is the level to which the skills of an unparalleled actor like him takes a character.
I’m so glad that he’s back! And I have almost settled down in this show. Adjusting was not easy, but he made it easier. It’s like having an old friend guide you around in a new school; you find new acquaintances and the bond with the old one strengthens...
I began liking him through Mohan and now, through him, I’ve begun liking Shaurya too. And I’m sure Shaurya will be another beautiful journey with lots of memories to cherish the entire life.
Wishing him lots of love and happiness and a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY once more,
Lakshmi (LonelyGlider)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KUNAL KARAN KAPOOR....
The Brave Ones - Shaurya and ?
Once upon a time, in a famous city, there lived a small boy with his parents.
His parents had married during the dark times, when the shadow of evil was still upon them. Soon, the evil came up with a plan and struck the peaceful life of the boy, killing his beloved ones. The only good thing was that the evil also got defeated by the power of love and it disappeared. But it’s presence was there in the little boy’s body, biding time to return.
However, the boy’s mother was a very compassionate young woman who didn’t even hesitate to sacrifice her life for him. He loved his mother a lot; her love was his only protection from the evil and the abuse he had to suffer at the hands of his own blood.
The experiences of his past made him different and difficult to be understood by others. Some people felt he would become like his mother while some argued that he could be the next dark power in rising. He was always watched by critical eyes that sought to categorize all his actions into good and bad.
As he became an active member in the society, he began earning a wide range of response from others : love, adoration, doubt, hatred and even fear. Prejudice followed him everywhere. Everyone watched him with awe and only a handful managed to break through that outer cover.
In spite of all that, he had grown up to be a brave, compassionate, loyal person and often found solace away from people.
Soon, friends entered his life - not a huge bunch, mind you! Just a handful loyal ones. He allowed them to dictate him often and found peace in not having to hold the reigns at least for a bit of time. They lightened his mood, brought smile to his lips and supported him in all his efforts
He never considered himself to be a super hero. Yes, he was talented in some fields but he ranked himself to be an above average, ordinary person in most of the other things. His much more talented beloved ones were his strength and he never had any problem accepting that fact. What made him the hero people looked upto was this attitude, the incredible courage and the good heart he possessed.
He never hesitated to lend his hand when his friends got in trouble. And being the ever-sensitive one, he could never see anyone suffer, be it friend or foe. This incredible compassion and empathy made him special.
He was a very observant person and even though his friends often had a different point of view regarding the matter, he tried his best to co-exist cordially.
He stood by his friends, but took care not to burden them with his load. He hated being the centre of attention, the reason for anyone’s pain. So, he always tried to be the peacemaker, hiding his wounds behind the concern for everyone else.
Now, one of his friends, a brave, intelligent girl, was someone the elite in the society did not consider worthy of being among themselves. They saw her as an outcast and never hesitated to express their displeasure of her existence. Her rights also became a part of his fight and he stood by her side throughout. The girl was no less than any man: in fact, she was much better than many. Emboldened by her trust in his leadership and friendship, she even abandoned her parents and set off with him.
Yes, he did have inner demons to fight...because of the very small fragment of evil that dwelt in his body. And there were moments when it threatened to spill. It often stoked his anger. And he had often vent it out at people who deserved it the least.
But at those moments, when the control seemed to slip, his ability to love retained it. Evil may dwell in his blood, but so did love. The memories of his beloved ones, the cause for which they had given their lives, the reason for the existence of the remaining ones..all this brought him back. He couldn’t even imagine letting all those sacrifices in the fight against evil go in waste. And having gone through enough suffering, he didn’t want anyone else to go through it.
This inner struggle, he chose to keep to himself. He tried his best to not to involve anyone else in there: the final battle is his and his alone. Not because he HAD to do it for others, but because he WANTED to do it. He had the choice to choose right or wrong, difficult or easy, light or dark...and he chose well. He realised that he shouldn’t feel afraid of the evil trying to take over him: he should pity it for it didn’t know anything about love or friendship. The serpent in his mind did try to fight for control, but on hearing the lion’s roar, it slithered away.
Thus, he soon became an inspiration for others. He radiated the courage to fight the evils in the society, to fight prejudice, discrimination and the so-called rules laid by the ancient, outdated practices, to raise voice against injustice. Most importantly, he taught us the power of love and how it can overcome even the most inherent evil.
Do I need to say the name of the person now? You can call him either
Shaurya Urmi Sinha
OR
Harry James Potter
If you have read/seen the wonderful wizarding world and also seen the teleserial Doli Armaanon Ki which is being telecast in the Hindi Entertainment Channel Zee weekly from 10.30 - 11.00 pm IST, then you’ll definitely understand what made me write this article.
Do read it once more...
You’ll see Harry materialising along with Shaurya....
Lily (and Dumbledore), the ones who taught the power of love with Urmi...
James, the doting, brave father with Ishaan...
Hermione, the “Mudblood” who fought for her rights with Diya...
Ron, the strategist as well as the much needed laughter in his life, with Chiku..
Awaz with Dumbledore’s Army
and
Samrat with Tom Riddle and his horcrux (and the Dursleys of course).
This article just highlights the similarities I found in the two, Shaurya and Harry and I don’t claim that both are the same. In fact, they have infinitely many differences too, the most important one being about their parents: James Potter was no Samrat and Urmi is luckily alive, unlike Lily.
Hope you liked this fun post!
