He is named after the gemstone kunzite, which is a variety of spodumene. The pink to lilac color comes from it having trace amounts of manganese.
The Sailor Senshi defeated Kunzite in the manga. In episode 44 of the anime, he was killed by Sailor Moon. He was the only one of the Shitennou to be killed by a hero.
In one of Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations, Kunzite was romantically paired up with Sailor Venus. Takeuchi never had the chance to explore the idea of Princess Serenity’s four guardian Sailor Senshi being involved with the Shitennou in the manga. While the first anime and the live-action adaptation both excluded the Sailor Senshi/Shitennou couplings, they were included in Sailor Moon Crystal.
Kunzite and Zoisite’s romantic relationship was unique to the first anime.
Unlike his peers, Kunzite never wore disguises or pretended to be a civilian.
Kunzite was the only member of the Shitennou to wear a cape. He also did not fully button up his jacket.
In the Sailor V manga, Kunzite was Danburite’s superior.
Kunzite never employeed already existing youma. He instead turned humans into youma.
