Kattuvichi

Bhoovarahachariar Swamy's upanysam on Thirunedunthaandagam Pasuram #11:Kattuvichi, also known as Kurathi, is a female soothsayer, who predicts what went wrong and recommends a course of action for a disease, life situation etc.Parakaala Nayaki is luckier than Parankusa Nayaki in terms of kattuvichi who came to them. Here are some insights/points of comparisons:1) Kattuvichi appeared for Parankusa nayaki in Thiruvirutham (20) and in Theerpaarai (Thiruvaimozhi 4.6) while for Parkaala Nayaki, kattuvichi appeared in Siriya Thirumadal and Thirunedunthaandagam (11)2) The kattuvichi who came for Paraankusa Nayaki was a "devathaanthara kattuvichi". She was not a srivaishnava kattuvichi. The fact that she was a "devathaanthara kattuvichi" can be seen from the pasurams in 4.6 Thiruvaimozhi and Thiruvirutham #20. In Thiruvirutham #20, the kattuvichi asks the mothers to pray for demi-gods like murugan etc. In Thiruvaimozhi 4.6.3, the kattuvichi who supposedly came to rescue Paraankusa nayaki told some weird and goofy ideas. The kattuvichi told the mother of Parankusa nayaki to smear meat (iraichiyum), alchol(kallum) etc throughout the house. This padhigam is a thozhi pasuram. Parankusa nayaki's friend tells Parankusa nayaki's mother that "Hey! Mother ! Don't get bogged down by this Kattuvichi's words. She is asking you to do some goofy stuffs inorder to cure her disease. She is asking you to smear meat and alcohol and do some poojai etc. She is asking you to dance like crazy while doing the pooja! That will do nothing to Parankusa nayaki. You will be left with just shoulder pain (num thol kulaikapadum). Don't go by the kattuvichi words. For Parankusa nayaki, the best thing that you can do is to chant the name of "Thuvaraapadhi mannan" in Thiruvaimozhi (4.6.10). That alone is the medicine for Parankusa Nayaki. The name of "Thuvaradpadhi mannan" that Parankusa Nayaki's friend told Parankusa Nayaki's mother as a part of recommendation fell on Parankusa Nayaki's ears. Just this name took care of all the sufferings she underwent. She became fit to sing the next padhigam "Cheelam illa siriyanelum". Similarly, in Thiruvirutham # 20, the kattuvichi asked Parankusa Nayaki's mother to pray for demi-gods like skandan etc (ilam deivam). They are all lesser and younger gods who can do nothing for Parankusa Nayaki's state. In this pasuram, the thozhi recommends to get thiruthuzhai garland of Perumal and smear it on Parankusa Nayaki's body. This alone will get her back.3) For Parakala Nayaki though, the situation was totally opposite. The kattuvichi who came was a srivaishnava kattuvichi. She exactly knew what was going through in Parakaala Nayaki's mind and so diagnosed perfectly and recommended the correct course of action. In Siriya Thirumadal, the kattuvichi's words alone is so beautiful when she starts to sing "kaaraar kuzhal kondai kattuvichi katteri, seeraar sulagil silanel piditheriya, vera....(Siriya Thirumadal #20 onward). Kattuvichi beautifully describes about Perumal who is the reason for Parakaala nayaki's state now and so she beautifully describes Perumal as the ONE who measured the whole world, the ONE who destroyed Lanka etc... The kattuvichi for Parankusa Nayaki did not even mention a single word about Perumal. Poor Parankusa Nayaki!!!. In Thirunedunthaandagam pasuram #11 (Pattudukum....), kattuvichi returns. This time around also, Parakaala nayaki's mother is trying to cure her daughter. Though the mother is happy about the fact that it must be Perumal who is the source for her daughter's condition, she wants her daughter to be cured now. She calls for help and lo comes a bunch of quacks, some doctors, some manthravadhis etc. Each one of them began to recommend some thing without diagnosing the root of the problem. But Kattuvichi came last and dismissed all these jokers. Kattuvichi took Parakaala nayaki's hand and immediately told that it is Perumal who is the cause for your daughter's condition and so HIS name alone would cure her. 4) Comparing the two, we can see that Parakaala nayaki was the luckier of the two as she got a srivaishnava kattuvichi. Sri.U.Ve.Bhoovarahachariar swami used to tell jokingly that for Parankusa nayaki, the kattuvichi probably came from places like thiruchendur etc that is in close proximity. For Parakaala Nayaki, it was surrounded by plethora of chozha naadu divadesams. Also it goes ahead to prove how important is to be in a place surrounded by bhaagavathas.5)The kattuvichi that came for Parakaala nayaki took Parakaala nayaki's hand.This touch of a bhaagavatha alone was enough for Parakaala nayaki to be cured. First was bhaagavatha's touch that will be followed by bhagavad anugraham. This happened rightaway for the fortunate Parakaala Nayaki.
