what's your take on the "attachment is forbidden, possession is forbidden" bit of the jedi code regarding plo and wolffe's relationship? is there some understanding between them that they'll always be more committed to some greater cause beyond them, or is plo indulging wolffe because it makes him happy also he's on the high council and telepathic Force bonds between general and commander are 900% more effective in battle, haven't you heard? thanks for the Content, it's a blessing in these times
I think they’re acting within the Code, actually.
I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before on here, but the Jedi, to me, are more-or-less Buddhists with magic. This whole attachment thing reads like the Four Noble Truths:
1) All life is suffering 2) The cause of suffering is desire 3) Suffering may be ended by eliminating desire. 4) One may eliminate desire by following the noble path.
The noble path being a collection of 8 aspirations including mindfulness, compassion to all living things, working to benefit others, and the like.
Desire/attachment in this context isn’t saying have no emotions or don’t be close to others or caring about people is a failing. It’s an understanding that all things are impermanent. This too will pass. Nothing has ever lived that will not die.
Yes, while you have something, enjoy it, treasure it, respect it, give it the regard it deserves. Be happy, fall in love, feel to the fullest extent possible. But when it’s gone - and one day it will be gone - trying to to make it come back will only cause more suffering. Accept that it was good while it lasted, and honor the good it brought into the world. Don’t break the world for something that could never be permanent. Nobody claimed acceptance and letting go would be easy.
I suppose you can think of Plo and Wolffe’s relationship as secondary to something greater; I think it’s something that exists in tandem. They’re building something between them and they’re committed to their roles. One day there will no longer be a Plo-and-Wolffe, and that’s okay. It will be difficult to accept, but Plo is going to try his hardest when it comes to pass, and that’s how he’s going to honor his beloved: by continuing to bring good into the world.
